SHORTAGE OF FARM LABOUR
SUGGESTION FROM AUCKLAND (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. That New Zealand should solve the problem of the serious shortage of farm labour by using prisoners of war was suggested at today’s meeting of the Auckland Primary Production Council by the chairman, Mr R. C. Clark, who said the use of Italian prisoners on Dominion farms would greatly assist the war effort and render valuable service to the Empire. Replying to an interjection that it would be unwise to introduce such a scheme, Mr Clark said: “We might be driven to a great many things we did not want to do ordinarily.” “We must be careful,” said Mr S. I. Crookes. “My suggestion is only a recommendation to the National Council of Primary Production. It is for tnem to approach the Government and for the Government to make a decision,” replied Mr Clark, after a discussion indicating a divison of opinion. A motion on the lines of Mr Clarks suggestion was carried with some dissentients.
