BOWLS

POPULAR ONEDAY TOURNAMENTS By JACK HIGH As in recent seasons one-day tournaments promise to play a big part in the activities of bowling clubs this season. Already the management committee of the Southland Bowling Centre has allocated dates for a big number of rink tournaments and it is possible that before the season is far advanced further allocations will be made. The Northend Club was unfortunate in having to postpone its popular Labour Day tournament because of rain. The club has not abandoned its tournament, however; the centre has agreed to the tournament being held on April 5. It is probable that fresh entries will be called for. The dates allocated to clubs holding one-day tournaments are as follows:— November 25, Gore; December 21, Makarewa; December 26, R.S.A.; January, Waihopai; January 25, Riverton; February 1, Georgetown; February I, Ohai; February 8, J. Macpherson; February 15, Aparima R.S.A.; February 22, Winton Central; March 8, Hokonui; March 8, Te Rangi; March 29, Southland; April 5, Northend; April 11, Otautau; April 14, Waikiwi. The date of the Waihopai Club’s tournament in January will be determined by the date fixed by the Invercargill Traders’ Asssociation for its annual picnic. i

The James Macpherson Club (Waianiwa) was among the clubs which opened their greens on Labour Day. The green was in fairly good order in spite of heavy rain in the early morning. A good representation of delegates from many city and country clubs contributed to the success of the opening. Mr S. C. K. Smith, member of the New Zealand Bowling Council, represented the Southland Bowling Centre.

The Woodlands Club held its opening on the evening of October 25 and in marked contrast to last year, when city clubs overlooked the opening function, there was an excellent attendance of representatives of city and country clubs. Every city club and the Edendale Club was represented. Mr L. Gray, president of the Southland Bowling Centre, complimented the club on its activities and assisted in the opening of the green. Mr D. McQueen, president of the club, welcomed the visitors. INTER-CLUB MATCHES TODAY Games in the inter-club competition for city teams will begin today with the first round of matches. Sixteen teams will take part in home and home matches. The draw for the first round is as follows, the games to be played on the last-mentioned green:—Georgetown v. Invercargill; Invercargill v. Georgetown; Te Rangi v. Waihopai; Waihopai v. Te Rangi; R.S.A. v. Northend; Northend v. R.S.A.; Southland v. Bluff; Waikiwi v. Southland. Club secretaries are reminded that results of games are to be left at The Southland Times on Saturday evenings.
