COMPANY OBJECTS TO CLAIM

COLLAPSE OF BRIDGE NEAR KAUANA

The collapse of a bridge on the Benmore-Otapiri road about three miles north of the Kauana hall under the weight of a gyrotiller on October 3 was the subject of a letter which was received by the Southland County Council at its meeting yesterday from the Southland Gyrotilling Co., Ltd. The letter stated that the machine had almost completed the crossing when the bridge collapsed, allowing the machine to drop a few feet into the stream. The ends of the bridge beams were then found to be rotten. Referring to the council’s claim for £6O for the reconstruction of the bridge, the company said it was intended to bring evidence showing that the bridge must have been unsafe even for ordinary traffic. The chairman, Cr W. M. Norman, said that the machine weighed 25 tons, which was too much to expect most of the bridges in Southland to stand. The reconstruction of the bridge would cost £l6O, and he considered the claim made on the company was reasonable. No action was taken.
