ON THE TURF AND OFF
J. J. LEWIS AGAIN TRAINING MISS BAFFLES’S SOUND BREEDING By SIR MODRED Two-year-old fillies racing in the North Island exceed the colts in point of numbers. Champion sprinter Aurie’s Star is from a line bred close up to the great Bend Or. “The best horse to cross the Tasman Sea in 10 years.”—An Australian writer on Beaulivre. ' Kai Tere, second in the Singapore Gold Cup, is by Siegfried from Vigilance, by Lord Quex. A. Cook, who prepared Miss Baffles to win at Avondale, served at Riverton with A. W. Mclvor. Sydney’s smart jumper Valhalla is a half-brother to the crack juvenile John, by John Buchan. Mince Pie, dam of Valhalla and John, was a brilliant galloper sired by Salmagundi. The first English organized racing event is claimed to have been decided in the year 1397. Long and strong work has marked Mosaic’s (N.Z.) progress of late on Sydney’s tracks. A very easy winner at Randwick on Saturday, Scientist is a colt with A.J.C. Derby and V.R.C. Derby engagements. He is a son of Marconigram (imp.) from Bimbil, by St. Alwyne (imp., and by St. Frusquin) from Bibble. Scientific investigators declare that the origin of the horse can be traced back for some millions of years. The first representatives of the equine race stood 20 inches in height and had five toes on each of four feet.
VETERAN TRAINER Hie reappearance in the field of J. J. (“Jos”) Lewis as New Zealand’s veteran trainer will be well received in turf circles. Hail fellow well met, the Ashburton sportsman has been associated with many good racehorses, but his fancy has always leaned to the jumping brigade and he has prepared many Stud Book performers to win over the battens or across country, while he has always been noted as a man with a very keen eye for prospective leapers, equines bred on the stoutest lines preferred.- At the Ashburton meeting he produced a four-year-old gelding called Star Wink, a novice to be accepted on breeding lines as a jumper in the making. The novice is a son of Day Comet (imp.), a sire who has been represented by crack jumpers. Star Wink’s dam was Ferino, by Solferino (imp.) from Mademoiselle Ixe, by Stepniak from Miss Dalrymple, by Pilgrim’s Progress (imp.) from Kate Dalrymple. The credentials of Stepniak and Solferino at once suggest noted sire lines, but it may not be generally known that Pilgrim's Progress (imp., and by Isonomy) was a very successful progenitor of staying racehorses and daughters successful at the stud. J. J. Lewis has selected a turf aspirant of enduring strains with which to stage his come back. MISS BAFFLES The result of the Avondale Stakes furnishes some very interesting facts for breeders and the public alike. The winner of this four furlong scamper was Miss Baffles, one of the first of her sire’s progeny to race in New Zealand. Her sire Baffles is a half-brother to Manna ( -.-inner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby and sire of Man’s Pal, now at the stud in Southland). Baffles, for whom 6000 guineas was paid as a yearling, is a son of Blandford (sire of four winners of the Derby) from Waffles (a faaous brood mare), by Buckwheat, son of Martagon, sire of Martian. The dam of the Avondale Stakes filly winner, Miss Baffles was from Tractrix, by Tractor (imp., and successful sire of stud mares) from Guizark, by Nautiform (son of Multiform) from Petrovna (winner of 36 races) by Stepniak (a great sire of mares and himself a brilliant racehorse) from Irene. The pedigree of Irene has always been unobtainable for official records, but it is understood in her home quarters in Central Otago to have been of high merit. Nautiform, the maternal grandsire of Tractrix, was a full-brother to the Southland sire Vice-Admiral (winner of the New Zealand Cup and Canterbury Cup of 1911). The brothers were by Multiform, from Rattler, by Nelson (thrice winner of the Auckland Cup) from Moonga, by Goldsbrough (a noted sire). This early two-year-old winner Miss Baffles cost a buyer from Hamilton 90 guineas at the Trentham Sales in January of this year.
