ROYAL LANCER’S NEXT
—— Tapanui Application Refused REQUEST TO RACE AT WINGATUI Nominations for the Gore meeting close <sn October 7. Nominations for the Dunedin meeting are due on Tuesday. Nominations for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting close on October 18. Trotting Solidly Amonos has been trotting well in recent starts and he appeals as a likely place-getter today. Bronze Eagle If Bronze Eagle races up to his good three-year-old form he should keep the improvers busy at Hutt Park. Useful Stayer Lady Milne is one of the few mares to have taken a two-mile record of better than 4min 20sec. From 48yds back she will not be out of it today. Unusual Naming Halt, Hearth and Haughty (twice) were unusually named winners of half the programme at Geraldine on Thurs-. day. Recollection Recollection has gone up 91b to 11.11 for his first day’s success at Geraldine, but this should not stop him today. Pace Suited The solid pace set by Combat in the Geraldine Cup suited Nightdress down to the ground. A similarly run race will see him hard to beat again.
Shaping Well Viking has been shaping well in his schooling over hurdles at Riverton. He is now in J. Thistleton’s team and is in the right hands to make good as a jumper. A Newcomer Safe Light, who is a newcomer among the novices at Geraldine today, was well supported at Ashburton, but failed to show up. He is a six-year-old gelding by Rosenor from Mainlight. No Engagement On his arrival in Sydney recently A. E. Ellis told reporters that he had no definite riding engagements this time, his visit being more in the nature of a holiday, though he might take a mount or two if they offered. Hearth In Form Hearth has been raised 91b to 7/10 in file open sprint at Geraldine today. She meets Gay Parade 61b worse and Toro Koura 91b worse, but now that she has struck form she should beat this pair again. Walter Moore , Walter Moore took a mile record of 2min 10 4-ssec last season, but he disappointed in some of his later appearances. There is no questioning his brilliance and he may be expected to stay better as a three-year-old this term. Over A Distance The three-year-old Platform, who was one of the outsiders in the novice race at Geraldine on Thursday, is to be tried over nine furlongs today. As he is engaged in later classic events his form will be of some interest.
Mates For Dillon Hall Fortunate (Wrack-Fortune Maid) and Jessie Keith (Lee Norris-Annie K) have been booked to Dillon Hall. Three-Year-Olds Gold Chief and Special Force, both engaged in the Wellington Stakes, are also down to run in handicap events during the day. Gold Chief has not been too reliable at the mark but Special Force has done everything right in his races. A Bracket The Accountant—Ferry Post bracket will be in firm favour for the Wilford Handicap at Hutt Park today, but most confidence may be placed in Accountant with Ferry Post in greater demand for the sprint event later in the afternoon. Novice Entrants Green Gables now meets Wild Coon on 21b worse terms than when she finished in front of him at Geraldine. Green Gables, however, secured a break at the start on Thursday, and Wild Coon may be expected to finish ahead of her. A Good Winner
Beaulivre won £2315 at two years and £7460 (£2870 in Australia) last season. With three wins in Sydney in this term he has increased his score to well over £ll,OOO. Beaulivre cost his present owner 2900gns. Pick Of Card
The pick of the card at Geraldine today is probably Royal Lancer. He beat a strong novice field at Ashburton and if he has taken no harm from that race —he will probably be improved by it—it should take a good hack to beat him. A Newcomer
C. Mackie, the youngster who won the Ashburton Handicap on Roy Bun, is not connected with any of the other Mackies riding in the South Island. He is a son of R. J. Mackie, who was ap- 1 prenticed to R. J. Mason, and later became a prominent horseman in the North Island.
Cup Candidate It is the intention of Mr H. E. Salter to take advantage of the conditions applying to the New Zealand Trotting Cup, for horses assessed on 4.28. by nominating Bayard. Bayard has revealed splendid form at two miles, and, all going well, he will make the trip to Addington, where he will be driven by A. W. Broughton. Better- Placed
Hatrack is better placed in the handicaps at Hutt Park today than he has been for some time and with average luck he should win a race—especially over two miles. The company he is opposed to is not strong and there will be solid support to say that he will win a double. A Marton Candidate
Colonel Bogey is sure to touch a short price if he contests the Marton Handicap, as he was a good thing beaten on the second day of the Wanganui meeting. He handles soft going well, and probably the conditions will be to his liking today. Halt’s Lincs
Halt, who surprised at Geraldine on Thursday, was having only his second start. He is a four-year-old gelding by Nightmarch from Peho, the dam of Wym-Wym, Rora Hiko and Clubman. Peho was got by Winkie from Little Owl, by Treadmill from Glenowlet, by Clanranald from Madowla, by Trenton —a good winning family. Permission Refused
The Racing Conference Executive has refused the application of the Hororata Racing Club to hold its meeting at Riccarton, and that of the Tapanui Racing Club to race at Wingatui., The Ashburton County Racing Club has been refused permission for a change of date to the King’s Birthday, Monday, November 25, and will race on the original date, Saturday, November 30, thus avoiding a clash with the Forbury Park Trotting Club. Hurdlers
Sir Frederick and Leopardstown are two interesting newcomers to the hurdle field at Geraldine today. At Ashburton this pair finished first and second respectively with Master Dingle third. Sir Frederick now meets Master Dingle 51b worse and Leopardstown 71b vzorse. Leopardstown meets Master Dingle on 21b better terms than when he beat him.
Royal Chief Royal Chief looks an improved horse after his race at Ashburton. He is bowling along freely in his work, and he should be ready to make a good showing on the second day of the Dunedin meeting, where F. D. Jones hopes to give him a race. After that, he should be at his best for Trentham, where the Harcourt Stakes will provide him with a great chance, at weight-for-age, over a mile and a-quarter. He is, likely to play a prominent part in the New Zealand Cup.
Trotting Cup At present there are 10 pacers eligible to take advantage of the two seconds swinging limit in the Trotting Cup, but it is unlikely that the owners of some of them will be ready to give away two seconds to start. The limit will be 4min 26sec, with horses assessed up to 4min 28sec allowed to run. A bonus of £lOO will be paid to any horse which gives away time and finishes third; and the right is reserved to reject any acceptance if there is a likelihood of a congested field. Haughty’s Success Haughty, who won both the light harness events at Geraldine on Thursday, is owned by Mr B. Grice and trained by O. E. Hopper. She is one of the best bred young pacers in the country and as she has done little racing so far she can be expected to improve a lot. She is a five-year-old mare by Nelson Derby (an Auckland Cup winner) from Regal Voyage, one of the best mares yet to race in New Zealand. Regal Voyage, who took a two mile record of 4min 19 4-ssec some years ago, was got by Happy Voyage from Logan Princess, by Logan Pointer from a Prince Imperial mare, the latter the dam of Lyons Heir, Lough Neagh, Glimpse (the dam of Royal Silk), Denver City and others. From Auckland
Parauri, from F. J. Smith’s Auckland stable, is a six-year-old and so should have his best days in front of him. Last season Parauri faced the starter on 12 occasions for two firsts and two seconds. At Auckland in December he ran second to Horse Power, who was conceding 24 yards, his time being 2min 45 4-ssec. He won the Alexandra Park Handicap in February going 4min 31sec. At Auckland in April he was second to Molly Direct in the Fergusson Handicap, the latter being in receipt of 12 yards. His last success was registered at the Waikato meeting in May, when he beat For tex by three-quarters of a length, with' Molly Direct a length away third. Parauri is handicapped on 24 yards behind in the Wilford Memorial at Hutt Park, and is one of the early favourites j
