INSTRUCTION IN SHEARING CLASSES TO BE HELD AT ROXBURGH Advice that as there was a possibility of a shortage of shearers this year classes were being conducted at Roxburgh in November at a fee of £2/2/- was received from the Otago Council for Primary Production at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday. The letter stated that young farmers would be taught in the use of blades and machines and they would be given instruction in the proper methods. The chairman (Mr R. H. Dickie) said that the idea was a good one and he thought that the association should recommend the scheme to the young farmers.

Mr H. P. Mclntyre said that it was a splendid opportunity for the young men to learn the art under expert tuition.

It was decided that the association recommend the scheme to young farmers.

Those present at the meeting were: Messrs R. H. Dickie (chairman), J. Bruce, W. Y. Dickie, A. Stewart, T. A. Fleming, R. K. Dodds, W. H. Sadlier, J. A. Edwards, R. Hutton, J. Logan, W. Dickson, P. Turnbull, Morris, R. H. Gardyne, G. L. Morrison, E. W. Stevens, H. P. Mclntyre and W. G. Mac Kay. The secretary of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Friesian Association advised that the £3 subsidy to the Friesian ’ classes had been again voted to the association for the 1940 show.

The Southland Jersey Breeders’ Cattle Club advised that it would contribute £2/10/- to the prize-money for the Jersey classes at the association’s annual show. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board advised that the district fat lamb competitions would be held again this year on the same conditions as last year. It asked for an expression of opinion as to whether the combined Western-Eastern competition be held at Makarewa or Mataura.

It was agreed that the competition should be held on the same terms as last year and it was decided to favouiMataura as the venue. It was also decided to recommend that the competition be held early in December.
