SOCIAL EVENING FOR SOLDIERS A crowd of more than 400 was present at the social evening to soldiers of the 3rd Echelon held in Lawson’s Hall, Tuatapere. The first part of the programme was devoted to community singing led by members of the Merry Makers’ Concert Party, interspersed with musical and instrumental items.
The following programme was given: Community singing; Mr J. Laurence (Lilburn), songs, “Friends of .Yesterday”; Mrs Mitchell (Riverton), songs, “Till the Lights of London Shine Again” and “The Handsome Territorial”; Mr O’Callaghan (Riverton), “The Road to The Isles” and “Smiling Thru’”; Mrs W. R. Langmuir, “Coming Through The Rye”; Mr Henderson (Orawia), “Phil The Fluter’s Ball and “Because I Were Shy”; Mr and Mrs W. Low, instrumental duo, “Silent Night” and “Sweet and Low.” The accompanists were Mrs S. A. Walker and Miss F. Browne (Pukemaori). After the musical programme, all the soldiers present were brought on to the stage. Mr C. F. Bruce was chairman and various speakers extended best wishes to the guests. Presentations were then made to the following soldiers of the district. Lance-Corporals H. Norman and J. S. Walker, Privates J. Walker, C. Austin, C. Donnell, B. Lennon, G. Cleveland. Privates G. Bryan, F. Brown and D. Hopkins, who were unable to be present, were also included. Mr B. C. Horrell also made a presentation to Lance-Bombardier G. Porter, who, although now not a resident of the district, taught at Te Tua for some years. Mr A. D. McClymont also made a presentation to Lance-Corporal J. S. Walker, who had been secretary of the Waiau Miniature Rifle Club for some time. All visiting soldiers were presented with cigarettes. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOT At the fortnightly shoot of the Waiau Miniature Rifle Club, W. Henderson won the possible badge and the rifle button with a score of 80.8 in the No. 1 shoot. In the No. 2 shoot, J. J. Lawson won the rifle button with 79.7. J. Denniston won the handicap button for both shoots. Results were:— No. 1 shoot.—W. Henderson 80.8-scr--80.8, J. Denniston 80.6-3-80.8, J. J. Lawson 78.6-scr-78.6, E. Gorton 78.6-1-79.6, J. A. Forde 78.5-scr-78.5, A. D. McClymont 77.4-scr-77.4, E. M. Mackay 77.3-2-79.3. No. 2 shoot—J. J. Lawson 79.7-scr--79.7, J. Denniston 79.5-1-80.5, A. D. McClymont 78.5-1-79.5, W. Henderson 77.4-scr-77.4, J. A. Forde 76.4-1-77.4, E. Gorton 74.3-2-76.2, E. M. Mackay 73.2-1-74.2. GOLF Thirty-two players handed in cards in the two-ball mixed foursomes played on the Tuatapere links. The best cards returned were by W. Excell (Nightcaps) and Miss A. Beaton, who won the prizes given by the Ladies’ Club with a score of 48-12-36. Other good cards were:—J. J. Lawson and Miss W. Hannan 43-6-37, J. A. Mangan and Mrs T. Webb 50-13-37, J. Brown and Mrs R. Walker 55-18-37. In the Silver Badge competition, the winner of the women’s weekly match was Mrs J. A. Mangan. At present the membership stands at 47, and each week-end visitors from Nightcaps and other Country Clubs are present.
