NO CHANGE IN WOOL LEVY
STATEMENT MADE BY MINISTER (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 21. It is not the Government’s intention to make any change in the wool levy, according to a statement made in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) in reply to a question asked by Mr H. S. S. Kyle (Nat., Riccarton). Mr Kyle suggested that in view of the fact that Britain had purchased the Dominion’s clip for the duration of the war and one year thereafter, the Government might consider wiping out the levy and thus lower the producers’ costs. The Minister replied that it would be unfortunate if the Wool Secretariat and the various wool councils were compelled, through lack of funds, to relinquish or relax their publicity and organizing work. “The war is bound to give a fillip to the use of substitute materials,” said Mr Martin, “and it is more important than ever that the use of all classes of wool should be encouraged to the fullest extent in the interests of wool growers. The Government does not propose to make any alteration.”
