GORE WINTER SHOW

SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE The Gore Poultry and Winter Show proved a popular attraction on Saturday, the final day, when there was a steady stream of visitors. The attendance for the three days was good and about £7l was collected at the door. Although many difficulties caused by the war conditions had to be faced by the organizers, the show was a great success and reflected much credit on the president of the Poultry and Winter Show Club (Mr H. Drysdale), the secretary (Mr E. G. Wallace), and their band of helpers. In the evening, Mr Wallace thanked business men and firms for the support which they continued, to give from year to year. The club realized that the prize-money given in the baking and vegetable classes was small and it hoped to be able to increase it after the war to encourage exhibitors. The club had felt the need for a commodious building for the show, said Mr Wallace, and he felt that an endeavour could well be made after the war to have a building such as a drill hall erected in Gore. If this was erected. the club would have no difficulty in filling it once a year and could provide an even bigger and better show.

Mr Wallace thanked patrons for + heir support and also the chairman ol the Gore District Patriotic Committee (Mr R. B. Bannerman), and his helpers who had worked for the success of the community sing held in conjunction with the show. Expenses connected with the show were considerable, but he hoped to be able to hand over a substantial sum to the Patriotic Fund. Proceeds from an auction sale of goods and produce which was conducted by Mr W. Sadlier on Saturday amounted to £2O. The sheep weightguessing competition was won by Mr E. G. Wallace, who guessed the correct weight, 1191bs. Seven persons guessed the correct weight of the lamb, 29ilbs, and it was awarded by lot to Mr L. Fallowfield, Balclutha. The supper cloth was won by Mr R. E. Young, the golden pheasant by Mr A. J. Briggs, and the canaries by Miss Munro, Waipounamu, Mrs John Harvey, Waikaka, Mr George Swanson, Mr J. Lay and Mr L. Cockerill, Balclutha.
