GORE

DRIVE TO COLLECT CLOTHING LADY GALWAY PATRIOTIC GUILD Members of the Gore Post Office staff are giving up their half holiday on Saturday, in common with Post and Telegraph employees throughout New Zealand, to collect clothing for refugees in Great Britain and Allied countries. The effort is being made in response to Lady Galway’s appeal. This was announced at a public meeting of women in the Gore district which was called by the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) for the purpose of appointing a Gore branch of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. Giving an outline of the scheme, the Mayor said that an appeal had been launched to collect clothing, principally warm, woollen clothing for women and children. This would be collected, sorted and packed by local sub-centres and then sent to a central committee in Wellington, which would despatch the clothing to the New Zealand High Commissioner in London (Mr W. J. Jordan) for distribution. Mr Newman emphasized that only clothing in good repair was wanted. Messrs A. V. Baker and G. C. McQuarrie, of the Gore Post Office staff, said that the postal officers in Gore had arranged a drive on Saturday and a number of lorries and other vehicles had been requisitioned for the purpose. Rural box-holders were being invited to give parcels of clothing, which would be collected by mail contractors. The Mayor said that persons intending to give clothes would assist the collectors if they would have articles parcelled ready for collection. Clothes collected >• the drive would be handed to the Gore branch of the Lady Galway Guild for sorting and packing. After some discussion it was decided that the members of the Gore Red Cross Committee should act as a branch of the guild. They are: Mesdames R. B. Bannerman, F. Steel, F. Ham, J. C. McDonald, E. H. W. Rowntree, D. M. Cochrane, James McKinnel, C. G. Burgess, L. Anderson, Misses R. I. Aitken and M. Paterson.
