TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND GORE HIGH 1 RUGBY FOOTBALL, HOCKEY AND BASKETBALL Rugby football, hockey and basketball matches were played in beautiful weather yesterday between teams representing the Southland Technical College and the Gore High School. The Rugby and boys’ hockey matches were played at Gore and the other matches at Invercargill. Following were the results:— Rugby football.—Senior, Gore 11 beat Technical 6; junior, Technical 25 beat Gore 6. ' Boys’ hockey.—Senior, Gore 4, beat Technical 0; junior, Technical 8 beat Gore 1. Girls’ hockey.—Gore A 14 beat Technical 0; Gore B 15 beat Technical 0. Basketball.—Technical A 28 beat Gore A 13; Technical B 19 beat Gore B 4. RUGBY MATCHES Gore seniors gave a good exhibition to win after being down at half-time. Technical dominated play for the greater part of the first half, but the backs could not finish off their movements. After half-time Gore showed more dash and added 11 points in quick time after having been down 3-0. Orr (Gore) was one of the best players on the field, showing initiative both on defence and attack. The Gore halfback Kennedy, was also prominent. Among the Gore forwards, Roy and Wayte were seen to advantage. McDougall (half-back) and Coughley (second five-eighths) were prominent in the Technical team. Patterson (Technical) scored a good try about 15 minutes after the start of the match and the attempt at conversion failed. Birse brought Technical’s total to six when he kicked a good penalty goal. Roy then scored for Gore,. Orr converting. Orr next scored, but failed to convert and 10 minutes later the same player kicked another penalty goal. The final scores were:—Gore 11, Technical 6. Mr L. O. Wallis was referee. The Technical junior team proved much superior to Gore and it scored a convincing victory by 25 points to 6. Technical was leading by 14 points to nil at half-time, but Gore fought back and made a good match of it. Technical’s points came from tries by Belsham (3), Payne, Ferris and Edwards and a penalty goal and two conversions by Hillis. For Gore, Campbell scored a try and Butler kicked a penalty goal. The referee was Mr J. Holt. BOYS’ HOCKEY Although some good individual play was seen in the game between the first hockey elevens, there were few combined movements. Technical attacked I soon after the start, but Gore retaliated and held a territorial advantage for most of the game. A few minutes before half-time, with Gore in a strong posiI tion, White goaled. In the second half, Hunt (2) and Wards goaled for Gore and the final score was: Gore 4, Technical 0. Messrs G. C. Hamilton and W. R. Curwen were the referees. Technical showed marked superiority in the game between the second hockey elevens winning by 8 goals to one. Play was always keen, but the combination of the Technical team work and individual skill were too much for Gore. In the first half Kennard (2), Bain and McDonald scored for Technical, making the score at the end of the first half: Technical 4, Gore 0. On the resumption of play, Technical kept up the attack and Hazlett (2), Kennard and Hutchins scored. Coster scored for Gore. Mr M. Fowler was referee. GIRLS’ HOCKEY The girls’ hockey elevens of the Technical College were decisively beaten in both games. The A team was beaten by Gore by 14 goals to nil and the B team suffered defeat by 15 to nil. The latter game was very onesided, the Gore team having a territorial advantage practically throughout the game. The match between the A teams, however, was not so one-sided as the scores would indicate. The Technical team made some good rushes and showed initiative in much of its play, but Gore was too strong and penetrated repeatedly by clever play. BASKETBALL In the basketball matches the Technical A team beat the Gore A team by 28 to 13, while Technical B won by 19 to 4. Both games were keenly contested and an excellent standard of play was maintained. The accuracy of the Technical forwards was a feature of both matches. RUGBY FOOTBALL EASTERN SOUTHLAND SUBUNION THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE GAMES ARRANGED With the Eastern Southland senior Rugby competition finished, the only senior game on Saturday will be a representative match between Eastern and Northern at Balfour. This will be the challenge for the Sports Trust Cup. At a meeting of the Eastern Southland Rugby sub-union at Gore last night Mr W. Southern was appointed manager of the Eastern team. It was decided to write to the South Otago Sub-Union suggesting July 27 as the date for a match between Eastern and South Otago. It was considered that the vacancies in the Eastern team caused by the inclusion of four players in the Country team to play Town at Invercargill on that date could easily be filled with good players. ’ The following third and fourth grade matches were .arranged: Third Grade: High School v. Glenham, at Gore; Mataura v. Wyndham, at Wyndham; Pioneer v. Albion, at Gore. The. Pioneer v. Albion match was arranged provisional to Albion being able to field a team. Fourth Grade: Mataura v. Wyndham, at Mataura; Albion v. High School, at Gore. NORTHERN TEAM FOR TRUST CUP GAME The following team will represent Northern in the Trust Cup match with Eastern at Balfour on Saturday:— W. Small; T. McNamee, McLean, G. McKnight; W. Stewart . (deputycaptain), C. Hickey; H. Soper; C. Soper (captain), F. Mulqueen, A. Pannett, R. Hazlett, A. Sherriff, F. Pringle; R. Gillespie, D. McGregor. Northern team has been strengthened by the inclusion of C. Soper and W. Stewart, who were not available for the match with Southern.
