APPLICATION FOR WAGES INCREASE
HEARING CONTINUED IN WELLINGTON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 17. During cross examination in the Arbitration Court hearing of an application for a general order to increase wages, Mr W. Machin, president of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, denied absolutely that the employers recognized there was a need for an increase in wages. He said he was chairman of a conference and the contrary was stated. ’ The employers said that there was no reason for any increase and the employers’ notes taken bore that out.
“We merely agreed to remove the disability the unions said they were under in not being able to apply to the Court for a general order,” said Mr Machin. Asked whether he suggested that if the Court increased wages the Price Tribunal should automatically increase prices, the witness replied that he did. If the Court made an increase in wages he would say the Price Tribunal should increase prices by a general order.
