MEN FOR FORTRESS UNITS
USE OF RESERVISTS IN CLASS 111 (Special to Th- Times) AUCKLAND, July 17. The use of men of the National Military Reserve, Class HI, has been authorized for the completion of fortress battalions. This is the first call made on Class 111 of the reserve since its organization just over a year ago, since when its existence has been in name only. Class 111 reservists are men between the ages of 36 and 55 who have had no previous military service. When the National Military Reserve was formed it was stated that Class 111 would not for the time being receive any training, but would ultimately be formed into special units, particularly engineer and other technical units. Fortress battalions at present consist ol two infantry units, one of territorials and the other of ex-servicemen of the National Reserve, Class 11. The new authority states that members of Class 111 of the reserve may be used not only to complete the establishment of the territorial fortress battalions, but also of the National Reserve, Class 11, battalions, at the discretion of the district commanding officers, and after consultation in the latter case with National Reserve, Class 11, battalion commanders. The instruction is to take effect immediately.
