FIRE IN PORT BOWEN

(United Press Association) WANGANUI, July 17. An outbreak of fire in the after hold of the stranded Port Bowen was quelled by the Wanganui Central Fire Brigade. The damage was slight, most of the fire being smouldering straw and timber. When the engine arrived at the cliff it was necessary to take it alongside and to prevent it sinking in the sand it was run along planks to the water’s edge. Water was pumped from the sea. The firemen entered the hold from the hatch. Because of the smoke it was necessary to w - ear respirators. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
