12,000-MILE JOURNEY IN EIGHT DAYS
FROM N.Z. TO MANILA BY AIR (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 17. Eight days after leaving Auckland by the American Clipper on Saturday Mr A. L. Lewis, a Pan American Airways official, hopes to be in Manila. Travelling by air on seven of the eight days, he will have covered approximately 12,000 miles on his arrival. For the past seven months Mr Lewis has been air base manager for the company at Auckland, and is going to Manila on promotion as section operations superintendent. Taking into account a day’s stay at Canton Island Mr Lewis will reach Honolulu four days after leaving Auckland. He will then travel by the company’s north Pacific route to Manila in a similar period, making stops at Midway and Wake Islands and Guam en route. Originally Mr Lewis had intended to travel to Manila by sea, via Honolulu, a journey which would have taken about 33 days. By the more direct sea route via Australia and Singapore the journey would take about three •' "eeks.
