SOLDIERS CHARGED WITH DESERTION
COURT MARTIAL SENTENCE CONFIRMED (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 17. The sentence of the district Court martial which heard charges of desertion against two soldiers at Narrow Neck on July 12, has been confirmed by the Officer Commanding the Northern Military District (Colonel M. W. McD. Weir) and promulgated. Charged with desertion in that he absented himself without leave from his battery from April 11 to July 6, Gunner Robert Guthrie, R.N.Z.R., 9th Heavy Regiment, has been sentenced to 90 days’ imprisonment, with hard labour. He has also forfeited 86 days’ pay. Gunnel - Tracy Fry, of the 9th Heavy Regiment, who was similarly charged, the dates in his case being from April 1 to June 28, has been sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, without hard labour, and has been ordered to be dismissed from his Majesty’s forces. Fry will forfeit 89 days’ pay.
