PROPHECY
To The Editor Sir, —To comment on the letter by “Veritas” about Daniel 11, why use Moffatt’s Bible. which apparently is often inferior in translation to the Authorized Version? Probably the best aids to the text of A.V. are the Revised Version (fifty-four revisers; adheres as closely as possible to language of A.V.), and the Jewish Translation of the Holy Scriptures (1917, translated by eight leading Jewish scholars; also adheres designedly to language of A.V., “whose admirable diction,” it states, “can never be surpassed.”) Complaint has been made about the deterioration of our secondary schools’ English. Ruskin, Saintsbury, Quiller-Couch, and other most competent English critics urge the constant reading of the A.V. for the sake of its English. Why should a translation made by one man, and into often inferior modem English, be given the opportunity of weakening the influence of the A.V., a translation made by 50 of the best scholars in England at a time when English prose wore its stateliest and'most majestic form? As to identifying Hitler with any of the powers mentioned in Daniel 11, according to the “historical” interpretation of prophecy they have been sufficiently identified in the Ptolemies and the Seleucidae. Moreover, I do not see how Stalin and Mussolini can ’ be identified in Daniel 11. But I think ' that, according to the “historical” in- I terpretation, Nazism, communism and ' Fascism can be identified in the group . of the three frogspirits of Revelation 15. ' —Yours, etc., FRANK SAMPSON. July 15, 1940. ;
