Coal Deliveries An appeal to householders to order coal several days before it is actually required is being made by Invercargill coal merchants. Reductions have been made in the allocations of petrol for deliveries and it will in future be necessary for merchants to group deliveries so that there will be a minimum amount of travelling for the lorries. This will be possible only if orders are received in advance so that full loads can be carried and each trip reduced to the shortest distance practicable. Householders are also asked to order the full capacity of their bins so that as few trips as possible will be necessary. At least 48 hours’ notice will be required with orders and merchants cannot in future guarantee delivery within a shorter time. The cooperation of customers is sought by the trade. Rate Demands City ratepayers will receive their rate demands next week. A special discount of 2| per cent, will be allowed this year on all rates paid by August 31. There is no increase in the total of rates levied this year, but some fluctuations can be expected on individual properties. In most cases the alterations are very slight, representing an increase or decrease of two or three shillings. Most ratepayers paying before August 31 will actually pay less i than previously. • I Waste Materials ’ The formation of a Southland organization to further the campaign for the utilization of waste materials will probably be undertaken next week-end. Mi - Charles Todd, of Wellington, chairman of the National Council for the Reclamation of Waste Materials, will visit Invercargill and will address a meeting of representatives of local ’ organizations called by the City Coun- | cil. | I Mittens For Camp Thirteen dozen pairs of mittens have been sent to the Burnham military camp by the executive committee of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council. The Canterbury Council has been advised that more supplies will 1 follow. | Vandals At Work | The sports pavilion at Queen’s Park, ; which is at present being used by the ! hockey associations, has been receiving I the attention of vandals. A wall has I been smashed with an iron rod and much interior damage has been done. A collection box, used by the Southland Women’s Hockey Association on Saturday last, was forced open and completely smashed. The contents, however, had been removed beforehand, so the efforts of the intruders went for nought. Greeks’ Patriotic Effort A collection among the Greek communities throughout New Zealand was held on June 28. It was reported at a meeting of the executive committee of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council that in Southland £26/1/6 had been received towards this effort. Thanks were extended to those responsible for the collection. Hidden Number Prize The holder of ticket number 2626 in the competition for the goods order of £2O, which was run in conjunction with the Invercargill traders’ mystery parcel and gala day, is the' winner of the hidden number prize. The holder of this ticket is requested to call on Mr K. Dixon, Thomson and Beattie Ltd., to receive the order. Sections For Patriotic Fund ! A gift by Mr T. 2. McGill and Mrs M. McGill, of Tauranga, of two sections in Elizabeth street for disposal > for the patriotic fund has been received by the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council. The sections have been accepted by the executive of the council and the donors have been thanked for their generous gift.
