WINTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The Deputy-Mayor (Cr N. Metzger) presided at the monthly meeting of the Winton Borough Council and there were also present Crs T. N. Eastlake, F. Tilley, R. W. Goodall and G. W. Walters. The tender of £l7O from Balch Brothers was accepted for the centennial gates to be erected at Centennial Park.

Cr Metzger said that the gates were being built of concrete. Many people did not think that the work should be carried out, but the money had been subscribed and the Government grant was to hand. If the work was not completed the subsidy would be lost. Speaking of improvements to Centennial Park, he said that it was a changing world and that the recreation grounds would probably be used to a greater extent in the future. He was of the opinion that people would be taking more exercises in the future than formerly and it would be realized then that the money spent had been well warranted. The Southland Progress League wrote making application for the council’s contribution to the league funds for the present year. It hoped for similar support as had been given in the past and mentioned that the council s contribution last year had been £5/5/-. It was decided to make a donation of £5 to the league. Mr T. N. Mitchell tendered his resignation as an associate member of the council. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided to write to Mr Mitchell and thank him for his past services. The Winton and District Horticultural Society wrote asking if the council would again give a cup or trophy valued at £2/2/- to be competed for each year and to be won three times, not necessarily in succession, for the best section and frontage. The sum of £ll5/10/- was received from the Department of Internal Affairs for auctioneers’ licences. No cases of infectious diseases were notified in the borough during the month, according to the report of the health inspector (Mr G. Kerr). The estimates for the ensuing year were discussed and it was decided to hold a special meeting to consider them. Cr Metzger said that with the world in its present state no one knew what was ahead, but it was advisable to keep the rates as low as possible. At the same time an endeavour should be made to keep the town at its present level. Certain work would have to be done besides replacements, but major work could be left aside. Cr Eastlake (chairman of the lighting committee) said that many of the street lights had been out for some time, but after some delay new bulbs had come to hand and the matter would be remedied immediately. He added that it would assist the committee greatly if people would advise of any defective lights in their localities. Cr Metzger (chairman of the works committee) reported that the trees on the main road at the north end of the town had been receiving attention and were in good order. He remarked that it was difficult to grow trees on a main highway. Many boroughs had tried and failed, but he was pleased to say that Winton’s effort was meeting with success.

PATRIOTIC FUND Together with the proceeds from two carnivals and various donations the sum of £5BB/15/2 has been collected at Winton and forwarded to the Provincial Committee of the National Patriotic Fund by the Winton Patriotic Committee. For the month of July the committee has decided to make a direct appeal tp people in its-district for a money contribution. The district controlled by the committee is within the following boundaries: — North, Lady Barkly comer; south, Thomsons Crossing; east, The Bend; west, the Oreti river. It was arranged that contributions should be sent direct to the secretary (Miss I. G. Russell) or Mrs T. A. Thomson or Messrs T. N. Eastlake, and R. King, soon after July 1.

It was mentioned that a generous response had been made to the shilling collection to provide for the 50 soldiers’ parcels requested from the' committee. The sum of about £27 was collected. RED CROSS SOCIETY There was a large attendance at a picture entertainment presented by the maYiagement of the Theatre Royal in aid of the Red Cross Sick and Wounded Fund. A vote of appreciation to the management for its generous action and to the staff and ticket sellers for their co-operation was expressed by Mr L. G. de la Perrelle on behalf of the Winton branch of the Red Cross Society. Additional donations received by the Winton branch of the Red Cross Society towards the Sick and Wounded Fund

EXPERIMENTAL FARM An area of five acres is to be sown in linen flax at the Winton Experimental and Demonstration Farm and after the crop is taken off, the ground is to be sown in black barley. This course was decided upon at the monthly meeting of the farm committee. Mr R. King presided at the meeting in the absence of the chairman (Mr J. Ewan). There were also present: Messrs J. H. Thomson, W. Calder, A. Stuart, J. W. Woodcock and Dr P. Gow and the farm manager (Mr J. Kemp). Mr Woodcock said that the farm should be expected to do something in the growing of linen flax and apart from the farm giving a lead in the matter it was quite a good proposition Many farmers were wondering what would be done with the ground between February and the spring time after taking off a crop of linen flax, and he suggested that a crop of black barley be grown. Black barley had proved its worth in North Otago by keeping up feed requirements to a remarkable degree when the swede crops had proved a failure. PERSONAL Mr N.
