HOSTILITIES END IN SYRIA
French Commander’s Orders ENEMY PRISONERS NOT RELEASED (Received June 29, 1.45 a.m.) LONDON, June 28. A message from Beirut says that General Mittelhauser, commander-in-chief of the French Army in the Near East, has ordered the cessation of hostilities in Syria. In the past two or three days there has been an exchange of communications between General Mittelhauser and the Petain Government. Enemy prisoners in Syria have not been released, however, although the Petain Government ordered their release some days ago. MOROCCAN UNITS FIRM The British United Press correspondent at Gibraltar says that according to reports from Casablanca all French units under General Nogues, ResidentGeneral of Morocco, have assured him that they are determined to continue the struggle against Germany on the side of Britain. FRENCH WARSHIPS A message from Cairo says it is understood that about 12 French warships, including three large vessels, are stationed at Alexandria under the command of a vice-admiral to whom the French community has sent a message urging him to continue the fight with the British Empire. RAIDERS OVER BRITAIN Last night’s raiders over Britain met very hot defence from searchlights and anti-aircraft guns. The enemy aircraft did their best to escape the beams of the searchlights and were seen retreating to sea with British fighters on their tails. There was a terrific barrage in the north-west of England.
