EXPENSES ABOVE REVENUE

Crippled Children’s Society

WORK OF BRANCH IN SOUTHLAND The possibility that the accumulated funds of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society might be exhausted in five or six years was mentioned by the president (Mr G. F. Griffiths) at the annual meeting last night. An analysis of the society’s accounts showed that the liquid assets of the branch totalled £l2BO, he said. The operations of the branch for the year excluding administration, had cost £7lO. The revenue for the year was £546. This showed that the branch was not able to carry on its work without drawing from the Southland share of Lord Nuffield’s original grant and the fund raised from the exhibition in Invercargill of Titania’s Palace. From this it appeared that the funds would be exhausted in five or six years unless some benefactor came forward. He did not think that the position would become serious and that when it became necessary to make an appeal the public would respond. In the meantime the branch must push on with its drive for membership. In the last year the branch had raised £290 in small subscriptions. The work of assisting crippled children was an important task which could be extended, the president said. Legislation was necessary before the full aid desirable could be given. One problem was that of education for the children. Then there was the question of fitting the children for earning their own livings. If they could be boarded out with craftsmen they might learn a trade. Mr Griffiths spoke of developments in other countries in helping cripples and said the international society had recently changed its name so that it could aid adults as well as children.

Eighteen new cases had been added to the books of the branch during the year, the president said. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected:— Patrons, Sir Robert Anderson, Messrs J. R. Hanan, R. J. Gilmour, J. W. Smith, D. McDougall, A. T. Newman and Walter Jones; president, Mr G. F.
