The latest news received by Mr and Mrs L. W. Spencer, Albert street, from their daughter, Mrs Patrick, was written on May 5. Mrs Patrick was leaving Aberdeen, where she had been living, for London, to be near her husband, Captain Francis Patrick, of the Scottish Cameronians, who was®in camp in the West Country before leaving for France.

Mr and Mrs Hugh Macdonald, who have been living in England for the past few years, are due to arrive in Sydney, to where Mr Macdonald has been transferred. The headquarters of Mr Macdonald’s firm is in Holland, and they

In response to a Girl Guide Empire appeal to buy two air ambulances and a motor-lifeboat costing £20,000, the New Zealand Guides raised £895 by voluntary subscription during the week June 1 to 8. As the response has been so good, the New Zealand headquarters is subscribing £lO5 towards the exchange so that £BOO sterling can be paid over to the Girl Guide headquarters in London. The appeal was for £250 from New Zealand, and it was hoped that this amount’ might be slightly exceeded. But not even the most sanguine members of the Girl Guide movement expected such a very generous response. The appeal closed in England on June 14.

LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

VISIT OF PROVINCIAL PRESIDENT

The League of Mothers meeting was addressed last week by Mrs E. N. Merrington, of Dunedin, provincial president of Otago and Southland.

Mrs J. D. Campbell, president of the local branch, extended a welcome to those present, particularly to Mrs Merrington.

Mrs Merrington conveyed greetings from the Dunedin branch and from the Dominion Council, which wished the Invercargill branch every success in the development. The home became of even greater importance in war time, she said, and every effort should be made to foster the happy influence of the home. The Dunedin branch had obtained the names of mothers and wives of men overseas, and had undertaken to visit these women, some of whom were very lonely indeed. The League of Mothers tried to do for the souls of the children what the Plunket Society did for their bodies, and with this object she urged mothers to establish family worship in the home, and so lay the foundation of a Christian background.

Mrs Milligan (Invercargill) and Mrs Gray (Riverton) thanked Mrs Merrington for her address.

During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs Burroughs, the accompanist being Mrs J. D. Campbell.
