NEED FOR MORE PRODUCTION

EFFORT IN EASTERN DISTRICT

The first of a series of meetings which will be held in all country districts to explain the Eastern Southland proposals for increased primary production was held at Maitland when there was a good attendance of farmers. The proposals of the Special production committee of the Gore subexecutive of the Farmers’ Union were explained by Mr S. D. Blomfield. At the end of the talk a special sub-com-mittee was formed to collect the cards, which will be issued to the farmers in a week’s time.

Reports of meetings already held were considered and it was decided that every effort should be made to collect information as soon as possible about the necessity for providing contracting units in country districts at a meeting of the special production committee of the Gore sub-executive. A decision was also made to send cards to all farmers with the object of getting a survey made of the local war effort, the cards to be collected • by members of local committees. In cases where individuals were finding it difficult to increase their effort because of the shortage of finance, it was decided to advise them to communicate at once with their stock agent, bank or other financial institution. Where advice was required on the desirability of certain farming operations, it was decided to advise the farmers to communicate with their local sub-committee, the Department of Agriculture or the honorary secretary of the Gore committee, Mr S. D. Blomfield.

The question of the necessity for increasing efforts to destroy rabbits was considered. As the value of skins appeared, at least temporarily, to be at a low level, it was thought that if some inducement by way of a good market for carcasses could be found the necessory destruction of rabbits would be accelerated. It was decided to write to the Government about this matter.
