LEADERSHIP NOT LACKING

STRONG DENIAL MADE BY MR DENHAM (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 20. A strong denial of the charge that the Government lacked leadership and initiative was made by Mr W. M. C. Denham (Lab., Invercargill) in the House this evening. “We have a leader of whom the country can be proud,” he said. “The Government has taken the initiative and has got out of the rut of conservatism, and we have a social service that is the envy of the world.” The Opposition was always saying that there was a demand for unity and that party politics should be forgotten, but he regretted to say that there was still evidence of party politics in spite of the Opposition’s claim that they had been sunk. Mr Denham emphasized the need for more equipment for soldiers, and remarked that so far as men were concerned the response from New Zealand was greater in proportion to any part of the Empire.
