RUMOURS CALCULATED TO CAUSE ALARM
“PEOPLE ANSWERABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS” (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 20. In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr A. H. Nordmeyer (Lab., Oamaru) asked the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) if the Government would take the necessary steps to deal with those who circulated mischievous rumours calculated to cause public alarm and needless anxiety to the relations of soldiers overseas. Mr Fraser said that the Government would certainly take the matter into immediate consideration. In the Public Safety Emergency Regulations a subversive statement included a statement intended, or likely to cause undue alarm to the public, or to any person or persons in relation to public safety or to the war. Certainly, he said, that part of the regulations would be enforced as any other part would be enforced. People publishing statements likely to cause undue alarm must be answerable for their actions.
