The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) has partially resumed his duties following his absence for some weeks because of ill health. He is attending meetings of the Cabinet and caucus. The Hon. F. Langstone, who has been deputizing for him, will continue to administer his portfolios for another- week or two.

The Hon. Mark Fagan, Speaker of the Legislative Council, has returned to his home after several weeks in hospital. He hopes to resume his official duties next month.

Dr A. Owen-Johnston was elected president of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association at the annual meeting on Saturday night. Second Lieutenant A. W. Wesney left last night by train for Burnham after spending week-end leave in Invercargill. Mr H. W. Wolstenholme, of the Invercargill staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager at Tapanui.

Dr G. H. Uttley returned to Invercargill last night from a week-end visit to Dunedin.

Mr J. Page returned to Invercargill last night from DunedinMr F. J. Robertson, son of Mr and Mrs G. Robertson, of Invercargill, has passed his final examination for entrance to the Royal Navy. Constable G. H. Bilbrough, of Invercargill, has received notice of his transfer to Bluff.

Mr C. W. Francis left by train last night for Wellington. Mr T. Pryde was elected a delegate to the Southland Bowling Centre for the twenty-sixth year in succession by the Te Rangi Bowling Club at its annual meeting which was held on Saturday night. After thanking members for his re-election, Mr Pryde said that while he had watched the best interests of his club he felt, having seen the game develop in Southland for more than a quarter of a century, that he also had another important duty—that of assisting in the control of bowls throughout the province. His aim had always been to carry out both tasks to the best of his ability. Mr J. R. Bell, former All Black football player, was bidden farewell by members and supporters of the Star Footbril Club on Saturday. He leaves soon on transfer for Otira. Tn presenting Mr Bell'with an eight-day mantel clock, the president of the Southland Rugby Union (Mi- N. R. Brown), said he had given notable service to Rugby in Southland and in particular to his club. He had represented the province from 1919 to 1930, the South Island in 1923 and 1925, New Zealand in 1923 and as vice-captain of the Maori team which toured England and France in 1926. The president of the Star Club (Mr W. Jenkins) and several other speakers congratulated Mr Bell on his promotion : and wished him every success in the future.
