IMPRISONMENT FOR DOCTOR
CHARGE OF INTOXICATION (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 13. A sentence of seven days’ imprisonment was passed in the Magistrate’s Court on Neil Gordon McLean, a medical practitioner, of Kaikohe, for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car on May 15. Five witnesses testified that the defendant was under the influence of liquor.
The defendant in evidence said that he suffered from the effects of shellshock. He denied being intoxicated, stating that he had only two drinks at the Wade Hotel, after having driven his car from Auckland. He said that he was tired and went to bed. He was awakened by a police sergeant who put him through tests and called a doctor to examine him.
The Magistrate (Mr F. H. Levien) said that he was satisfied the defendant was at the time suffering from the effects of alcohol and the Court could not distinguish between him and any other person. The defendant’s driving licence was cancelled for 18 months.
