BRIGHT BOXING AT MATAURA

SUCCESSFUL TOURNEY COMPETITORS FROM MANY PARTS OF PROVINCE The tournament run by the Mataura Boxing Club was very successful. The club arranged a series of nearly 20 specially matched bouts between boxers from Invercargill, Gore, Bluff and Mataura. In every contest there were willing exchanges, The competitors included the Southland flyweight champion, F. Brown (Invercargill), and the provincial bantamweight champion, A. Cameron (Wyndham), the former champion welterweight of Wellington and Taranaki and holder of the provincial welter and lightweight titles, H. Calder (Bluff), and the middleweight champion of Southland, W. Enwright. At the end of the entertainment the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell), president of the club, distributed silver trophies to the competitors. Results:— MIDGETWEIGHT E. Ball (Mataura) drew with T. Thompson (Mataura). Tire boys mixed it gamely durng each round, but Thompson’s longer reach and straight left were troublesome.

A. Forbes 7.1 (Gore) beat J. Mclntosh 6.8 (Mataura). The boxers traded right and left blows freely, Mclntosh’s left landing several times and he had the better of the exchanges. Forbes carried the fight to his opponent in the final round, but repeatedly met trouble with Mclntosh’s left.

P. Folster 8.7 (Mataura) beat A. Haggart 7.5 (Gore). Folster led strongly in the opening stages, but Haggart fought back gamely. The fight was stopped in the third round, Folster being declared the winner. N. Drake 6.7 (Ocean Beach) beat C. Nolan 6.12 (Gore). The contestants mixed it in the first round, Drake getting the better of the exchanges. G. Farry 7.0 (Gore) beat L. Dotting 6.0 (Mataura). Although conceding a stone in weight, Dotting shaped well and landed lefts to Farry’s face. Farry traded punches in the next round. BANTAMWEIGHT H. Phillips 7.9 (Gore) beat M. Hannah 8.5 (Mataura). Phillips connected hard to the body and face in the first round and did most of the leading in the second round, though Hannah’s guard could i.ot be broken. Both competitors connected in the third round with rights and lefts to the head and body. A. Phillips 8.13 (Gore) beat D. English 8.7 (Mataura). Both men landed with straight lefts in the first round. In the second round English went through the ropes after a solid right hook by Phillips, who was declared the winner.

WELTERWEIGHT R. Norman 10.9 (Mataura) beat A. Hicks 10.6 (Gore). Norman opened up aggressively and drove his opponent round the ring. The pace was too solid to last and both men tired before the gong. Hicks took hard punishment in the second round. S. Redman 10.4 (Mataura) beat A. Sim 10.0 (Gore). Redman was most aggressive in the opening round and connected to the head and body. Exchanges in the second round were fairly even. LIGHTWEIGHT J. Cowan 9.10 (Mataura) beat G. Hillstead 9.7 (Invercargill). Cowan opened a whirlwind attack from the gong, but was held by his opponent. He landed lefts and rights to Hillstead’s face early in the second round and continued to get through his opponent’s guard in the final round. HEAVYWEIGHT C. Scott 12.7 (Gore) beat W. Murdoch 13.2 (Mataura). Scott landed heav” • with both hands soon after the gong, but Murdoch fought back gamely and traded punches. Scott hit out freely in the final round, connecting solidly to the head and body. SPECIAL CATCHWEIGHTS

L. Bolger 10.4 (Mataura) heat I. Ritchie 9.12 (Gore). Bolger had the better of the exchanges and landed stinging rights and lefts to the face in the first round, following up with the same tactics in the next round to floor Ritchie. The referee intervened and declared Bolger the winner.

R, McLeod 6.0 (Mataura) beat T. Farry 7.0 (Gore). The boxers were willing to mix it solidly in the opening round, with McLeod doing most of the leading. Farry had the advantage of height and reach, but took a fair amount of punishment. I. Herbison 10.8 (Mataura) beat P. Burke 10.6 (Gore). Herbison connected several times with his left to Burke’s head and took the fight to his opponent practically throughout the contest. A. Cameron 8.2 (Wyndham) beat F. Brown 8.2 (Invercargill). Cameron connected twice to the face in the first round. In the second round Cameron did most of the leading, with Brown content to hold. EXHIBITION BOUT H. Calder (Bluff) and W. Enwright (Invercargill). The first round was marked by a fair amount of in-fighting with good, clean work when it came to the exchanges. Enwright made use of his left and took as much punishment as he gave. The public enjoyed the exhibition and both men were well received.
