MERINGUED APPLES Boil J pint water and 3oz brown sugar and 1 dessertspooh butter until a thick syrup. Peel and core 6 apples and place them on a baking dish. Pour over syrup and bake in oven until tender, but not broken. Lift them from the syrup and cover with a meringue made as follows: Boil 1 cup sugar with i cup water until syrup will form a firm ball when tried in cold water. Beat 3 egg-whites until stiff, gradually add syrup and beat until meringue will hold its shape. Cover apples well and place in hot oven for a few minutes to brown. Serve hot or cold.
