Mr V. J. Wise, Invercargill manager of the Australian Mutual Provident Society has been made an associate of the Insurance Institute of New Zealand. Advice has been received that this honorary degree was conferred on Mr Wise at the recent annual meeting in Wellington of the executive council of the institute. Mr D. W. Stalker will leave by the express this morning to attend a meeting of the national council of the Federation of Labour at Wellington. Mr C. E. Purchase, barrister and solicitor, of Christchurch, has been appointed to the British colonial legal service in Africa. Mr Purchase will leave Christchurch soon to take up the position of Assistant AdministratorGeneral and Deputy-Official Receiver in the protectorate of Uganda. Mr Purchase, who is a son of Mr J. E. Purchase, formerly principal of the Christchurch Training College, was bom in 1907 at Ashburton and educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Canterbury University College. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1929 and as a barrister in 1935 when he graduated LL.B. Mrs Purchase, formerly Miss Yvonne Lewey, is a daughter of Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.—Press Association.
