GOLDEN WEDDING

WELL-KNOWN COUPLE IN DUNEDIN

A couple well known in many parts of Otago and Southland, Mr and Mrs A. H. Moorhouse, of 20 Dundas street, Dunedin, celebrated their golden wedding on Sunday. Married at Milton on May 19, 1890, by the Rev. Joseph Blight, they have lived at Milton, Waihola, Nokomai, Parawai and Herbert, and 27 years ago they went to live in Dunedin, where they have made many friends. There were numerous callers at their home during the week-end, and among the telegrams of greetings and congratulations was one from the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser). Mr Moorhouse, who is 77 years of age, came to New Zealand at the age of 11 years. For many years be had a flourishing tinsmith’s business at Milton, and later he owned flaxmills at Waihola, Manuka Creek and Nokomai. Later he and his wife took over an accommodation house near Lumsden, and after a period there they bought a poultry farm at Herbert. Twenty-seven years ago they went to Dunedin, and during the war Mr Moorhouse returned to the tinsmith trade and was engaged at the marine workshops at Port Chalmers making rafts of metal cylinders for emergency use on troopships. He retired about 55 -years ago, but still works at his trade as a hobby. Mr Moorhouse has been something of an inventor in his day, and has patented a number of useful articles. One of the best-known of these is the Moorhouse cable connector tor electric power poles. In spite of his 77 years, he is still very active, and expert with his hands. He entertained a number of his guests with his auto harp over the week-end, and Mrs Moorouse, who is 10 years his junior and is well known by most Dunedin community sing leaders, gave a number of songs.
