VITAL STATISTICS A slight increase in births and marriages and a decrease in deaths is shown in the vital statistics for Gore for April compared with the figures for last year. The figures, with those of last year also given, are as follows:—

BUILDING RETURNS Seven building permits for work valued at £2920 were issued at Gore during April. Two of these permits were for new residences, one being valued at £1660 and the other at £750. Five permits were issued during April last year for work valued at £3140, this including three permits for new residences valued at £lO9O, £lOO5, and £lOOO. No permits were issued during April in 1938. MORE HOURS OF SUNSHINE Although there was an increase in the hours of sunshine at Gore during April, compared with the figures for April last year, the weather was not particularly favourable, heavy winds, dull skies, light frosts and. fog being experienced. The rainfall was about the same as that in April last year. The total number of hours of sunshine during the month was 133, this being an increase of 24 hours compared with the figures for April last year, when 109 hours were recorded. One hundred and sixty hours were recorded in April 1938, 101 in 1937 and 103 in 1936. The total hours of sun-

shine for the year to date is 765, compared with 639 at the same time last year, and 802 in 1938.

The rainfall for the month was an average one, 2.18 inches of rain falling during the month, compared with 2.20 inches in April last year. In April 1938 1.02 inches of rain fell and in 1937 the fall was 4.53. The rainfall for the year to date shows a big increase compared with the figures for the same period last year, the amount recorded being 20.42 inches, while up to April 30 last year 11.04 inches of rain had fallen. Heavy falls of rain earlier in the year are responsible for this increase.

There were several light frosts during the month, the heaviest being four degrees. In April last year the heaviest frost registered was six degrees The frosts were more severe in April 1938,

when 13 degrees were recorded on two occasions during the month. R.S.A. MEMBERSHIP At the end of the financial year of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association the Gore association occupied tenth position on the financial membership ladder of all New Zealand associations. This advice was received at a meeting of the executive of the Gore association from the general secretary, Wellington. The letter stated that Gore occupied tenth position on the ladder with 654 members, Dunedin being in fourth position with 2662 members, Invercargill sixth with 1050, and Oamaru eighteenth with 428. The total New Zealand membership was 32,401, compared with 31,549 last year.

Those present at the meeting were: Messrs A. L. McDowell (president), J. Ritchie, W. H. Sadlier, E. J. Columb, T. F. Rusbridge, F. M. Murray, P. R. Stewart, M. Green, J. Adams, C. M. Wilson, J. McDonald, J. McQueen and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., representing the West Otago sub-association, was also present Motions of sympathy were carried with the relations of the late Mr J. Walker (Wendonside), and with Mr A. D. Williamson (Gore) in the recent death of his mother. Mr W. Christie (Waikaia) forwarded the sum of £4/13/3, the net Anzac returns at Waikaia, and Mr R. H. Mathews (Riversdale) forwarded the sum of £6/3/-, the returns for Riversdale. The secretary reported that the Gore collection amounted to £lB/4/2a-
