TRISOX RIGHT AGAIN
Hurdlers Schooled At
Invercargill
FLEET STREET'S GOOD
FORM Nominations for the Patriotic meeting close on Monday. Light Work Dark Flight is still being restricted to light work but he is. in the right order to begin more serious task s. He has been nominated for the Ashbuiton County meeting. For Ellerslie Nightcalm is being given a chance to freshen up before being raced at the Auckland meeting. Team For Ashburton R. E. McLellan has nominated Waitoru, Ackemma and Wild Coon for the Ashburton County meeting. Tracks Improved The tracks at Invercargill have dried a lot during the week and a continuation of the present spell will find them providing good going on Saturday. Irish Fling There was support for Irish Fling at the Otautau meeting but she failed badly. She has worked well since and on a better track may show up at tiie Southland meeting. Has Prospects Considering her recent form Vanity Queen should be hard to beat m the hack mile on Saturday as the field is not a strong one. Heidelberg’s Rider Heidelberg will be ridden by G. Barclay on Saturday. The Lord Waiden gelding has been nominated tor the Ashburton County meeting on Saturday week. Stable Choice Gold Wren and Master Balboa were withdrawn from the Ritchie Memorial Steeplechase on Saturday and the stable will rely on Trisox while Baltruin was withdrawn in favour of his stablemate, Guste. Spelling
Rodeur has been put aside for the remainder of the season while Southern Sail is also spelling. The latter has compiled a very sound record this term and in nine starts has won once and been five times placed. By Garnish
A newcomer to C. F. Low’s team, is a four-year-old gelding by Garnish from the Balboa mare Reyboa. He was schooled over a hurdle yesterday morning and cleared it in great style. He is just the type to make a name for himself as a jumper. Excellent Fields
Excellent fields have been secured for the winter meeting of the Southland Racing Club on Saturday and racing of a keen and interesting standard is assured. Although there are only six acceptors in the steeplechase the nine runners in the hurdle event promise an interesting contest. Prohibitive Odds
Wild Career and Heidelberg have been selected as early favourites for the Awarua Handicap with Spendthrift and Nigger Boy in the first line for the President’s Handicap. The odds are prohibitive as in several cases they are not available. Hack Sprinters Gold Robe, who won the hack sprint at the Otautau meeting, now meets Mondello (second) four pounds worse and Colonel Rouge (fourth) eight pounds worse terms. Gold Robe is in great order for- his race on Saturday but as Colonel Rouge will probably be better suited by the longer journey he may turn the tables. Trisox Recovered
Trisox has been working in good style at Riverton and he promises to strip in good order on Saturday. When he pulled up lame in the Great Western steeplechase it was thought that he had broken down but the. injury was only a superficial one which had been opened up again and he soon made a good recovery. Import Licences Required
It is announced from Wellington that with the purchase of blood-stock overseas, the intending purchaser should, before completing the transaction, ascertain whether an import licence will be issued by the Government. First Since 1891
When Wild Talk won the Timaru Cup on Saturday she scored the first win in that race for the Clifford colours since Cruelfield won in 1891. It was a coincidence that both winners should have carried the same weight, 8.8. Hurdlers Schooled
The only work of interest at Invercargill yesterday morning was a schooling bout by Milford (T. J. Boyle) and Colonel Rouge (J. L. Strathern). Two hurdles were put up on the course proper and they cleared them in great style, Milford coming home the last half mile in 58 4-ssec. He has made good progress for the short time he has been in work. Overdue The last race that Aspire won was at Riverton two years ago when she carried 8.4 and beat Wynwood (8.2) and Foxlove (7.11) in an apprentices’ seven-furlong race. She was raced only once last season and in several starts this term her only platings have been two seconds. With 8.9 in the hack mile on Saturday she has her full share of weight, but this should not stop her from making a good showing.
High-Class Sprinter Fleet Street, who is to reappear on Saturday, has not raced since the Christchurch Hunt meeting last July after racing at Trentham a week or two earlier. At Trentham Fleet Street (8.9) finished second to Amigo (9.11) the first day and on the second day he finished second to Saki over seven furlongs. Saki, however, was disqualified for interference and Fleet Street was placed first and Mishna second. On that occasion Fleet Street carried 8.13. His previous success was at the Dunedin winter meeting when he carried 8.6 and beat Rebel Mate (9.10) and Strip (8.7). Fleet Street won by four lengths in lmin 13 3-ssec. As a five-year-old now he should be capable of showing even better form this winter.
Has Earned A Spell One of the greatest disappointments at Washdyke on Saturday was Swordstick, who had a track to suit him, but was not able to show any of his pre-
vious dash. Swordstick has had a strenuous season, and is now to be given a well-earned rest. He has started in 26 races this term, and has won four times and been placed on seven occasions.
Slayer’s Record Slayer will be much more forward when he strips on Saturday than he was at Riverton. With 11.13 he is set a big task but there is no doubt about his ability to carry weight, in spite of his lack of size. At Riccarton last August he carried 10.3 in the Grand National Steeplechase and finished third to Padishah (11.5) and Erination (11.10). In the Beaufort Steeplechase he carried 10.10 and beat Hanover (10.3) and Gold Wren (10.5) while on the third day he won the Lincoln Steeplechase with 11.4, Bridegroom (10.5) and Gold Wren (10.2) being the only other starters. Slayer appears much more robust this season and he again promises to be one of the best steeplechasers in the country. Even if he fails to concede Guste 321bs, Trisox 181bs and Gay Boa 411 b his race on Saturday will fit him for his engagements at the Dunedin winter meeting next month.
