BODY FOUND ON ROADSIDE
ELDERLY MAN KILLED NEAR WINTON
APPARENTLY VICTIM OF MOTOR ACCIDENT
The body of an elderly man named Patrick Cosgrove, a pensioner, aged about 65, was found beside the Inver-cargill-Lumsden main highway at Lady Barkly, near Winton, yesterday morning. The injuries which he had suffered indicated that he had been struck by a motor-car and that death was probably instantaneous. The body was found about 11 o’clock and it was evident that death had occurred some time previously. Rigor mortis had set in, but the police had no information last night when death had occurred. It was thought possible that the accident might have happened 24 hours or more earlier, but also it might have occurred much later. No details about the relations of the man were known by the police yesterday, but it was learned that he was formerly a resident of Orepuki. Extensive police inquiries were begun immediately after the accident and will be continued today. An inquest was opened before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., yesterday and adjourned. MAN’S BODY FOUND IN ESTUARY DEATH OF RAILWAY FOREMAN The body of Thomas Aitken Clark, aged 55, railway coaching foreman at Invercargill, was recovered from the Invercargill estuary shortly after midday yesterday. Clark had been missing since last Monday when he left home about 5.30 a.m. to go to work. His bicycle was found at the jetty later. An extensive search was carried out during the week by the police. The inquest was opened yesterday before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M. Evidence of identification was given by a brother of the dead man. MAN FOUND DEAD IN HUT The police received advice yesterday that John Bright Broadbent, aged 81, a pensioner of Waikawa, had been found dead in his hut, where he lived alone. No inquest will be necessary. CAR LEAVES ROAD A five-seater sedan motor-car, driven by George Thomas Graham, of Dunedin, left the road at the bend at the Mataura saleyards about 11.30 o’clock on Friday night and crashed into a heavy straining post at the gateway to Mr C. E. Rowe’s accommodation paddock. The car struck the post with considerable force and rooted it out of the ground. The vehicle swung round through a five-barred gate and finished up facing the opposite direction. The driver and a passenger, David Solomon, also of Dunedin, both suffered severe abrasions, cuts and shock, but after receiving treatment from Dr Woodhouse, they were able to proceed on their journey. Visibility was poor at the time of the accident, when a heavy drizzle was falling.
