ORTYX’S FINE EFFORT

Yearlings Shipped To Australia

FOUR CHELANDRY STUD YOUNGSTERS Acceptances foi' the Southland winter meeting close next Tuesday. Poor Showing Poniard’s effort on Saturday does not give him much chance at coming meetings. Near Her Best Mondello’s effort in finishing second to Gold Robe points to her showing up when next produced. Wrong End Nightwings, who was a good favourite for the Otautau Cup, finished a bad last while Balmenter, second favourite for the Waimate Cup, was also last home. Sound Display Gay Boa ran a great race to be second to Guste. When Guste and Red Terror headed him at the second last fence it looked as though he had had enough, but he finished on gamely in the run home. Colonel Rouge Colonel Rouge’s failure in the hack sprint was one of the surprises of the day on Saturday. The fast pace set by Mondello had him in difficulties at the half-mile and from then on he did not have much chance. Waikato Meeting Nominations for all events for the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting on May 18 and 20 close at 8 p.m. on Friday with the secretary, Mr E.- H. O’Meara, Box 351 or ’phone 3140, Hamilton. The chief events the first day are ■ the Te Rapa Steeplechase (£750), Waikato Hurdle Handicap (£500) and the President’s Handicap (£500). Little Work There was very little fast work at Invercargill yesterday morning when the going on the course proper was heavy after a frost. Wild Coon and Black Bard shaped well in a bout over five furlongs, finishing together in Imin 7 4-ssec, the last half in 53 4-ssec. Hurdling Recruit Spendthrift, who has won five flat races this season, is down to make his next appearance as a hurdler at the Southland winter meeting. The Paper Money gelding has yet to win over further than six furlongs, but has been placed up to a mile. He has done a good amount of schooling at different times and has shaped well. Out Of Action

Boswell galloped after the Otautau meeting on Saturday but he is still troubled with soreness and he is to be spelled for a time. The Balboa stallion has been a difficult horse to train and since being recommissioned he has done practically no work. Aspire Disappoints

Aspire disappointed in her race on Saturday when she finished well back in the hack seven. Her form has been difficult to follow as she has been working well and has not been troubled by unsoundness. It is the intention of her trainer to try her over middle distances. First Win Dolita, who won her first race on Saturday, is a good type of mare by Songbird from Clotilde, the dam of Silk Garter, Tuilight, Strong Heart and Just Imagine. Clotilde, who was in her twentieth year when she foaled Dolita, was by Rokeby from Camille, by Tasman. Brilliant Effort Ortyx’s third in the Crown Handicap at the Otautau meeting was one of the features of the day’s racing. She behaved well at the barrier but shortly after the start she suffered a check and was knocked to the rear of the field. She was still giving away a good start into the straight but finished with a great run to get up for third. Ortyx has developed stamina this season and there are few sprinters about with better prospects. She is to be put aside after the winter meeting at Invercargill. Related To Araboa Aravane, who won a double at the Waimate meeting, is one of the few of Weathervane’s progeny at present racing. Her dam, Lady Winton, produced another useful winner in Araboa. Aravane’s only previous win this season was at Cromwell in March, when she won over a mile. She is engaged at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, and if reserved for the middle distance hack event, she will add interest, as her ability to stay on won both races for her on Saturday. Noko Resumes Mr W. E. Hazlett has taken up the two-year-old Noko and also a two-year-old by Sir Simper from Lorette, the dam of Colonel French. Noko has been added to the list since last raced and he has furnished into a fine type of youngster. The gelding from Lorette also boasts plenty of size and has shaped well in his tasks to date. For the same stable C. F. Low is handling two rising yearlings. Both are colts by Salmagundi, one from Direct Hit and the other from Brightmark. The Direct Hit youngster is a late foal but is a particularly fine type. He ranks as a half-brother to Ballybrit and Shillelagh Wood. The colt from Brightmark, the dam of Cintilla, Beam, Verdure and Kippen, stands 15g hands. For Australia Four rising two-year-olds from the Chelandry Stud were sent to Australia yesterday to join Mr W. T. Hazlett’s team at Caulfield. . A colt by Colonel Cygnus is out of Irish Polly, by Polazel from Bridget, by Paper Money from Sprig of Erin, while a second colt by Colonel Cygnus is a member of the same family, being out of Bridget. A filly by Man’s Pai is out of Gladlight, the dam of Laughing Light and Cygnus Light. Gladlight was got by Paper Money from the imported mare Simper, who has left a string of fine winners. The fourth youngster is a colt by Man’s Pal from Dazzling Light, the dam of Lambent, Strong Light, Dazzling Raid, Dulzura and Raiding Light. Dazzling Light was a Kilbroney mare from Simper. All four youngsters have been handled and have shaped well in the work they have done.

Waimate Cup Failures Two big disappointments in the Waimate Cup were Cape Gabo and Balmenter. Both were slow to find their

feet, and seemed to be in trouble thereafter, attempts to improve their positions at various stages meeting with setbacks. Hanlon also appeared to have a rocky passage, and then finished very fast. Another in Studley Royal would no doubt have offered some danger if he had not been asked to race over a mile under highweight conditions a little ever an hour earlier. After getting away badly mainly through his own fault, he ran to the front passing the half-mile and was still in charge entering the straight, but naturally he could not go on. Racing horses twice during a day with only a little breathing space in between appears to be becoming common at South Island meetings. The procedure may be advisable when short courses have to be tackled, and a case in point was provided on Saturday by Aravane, who, after winning over six furlongs, came out again two hours later and won over seven furlongs.
