VINOLA TO RACE AT OAMARU

DOUBLE TO JACOSE AT WAIMATE

GALLANT KNIGHT RESUMES TRAINING Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting close on Friday. Novice Prospect Sagacity, who is a half-sister by Peter Moko to Toorak, should not be long in improving on her latest placing. Debtor’s Display Debtor continues to act erratically in her races and again on Saturday she lost any chance she had at the start. Catawrack Catawrack ranks as a half-sister by Wrack to Rey Chimes, winner of the Wyndham juvenile Stakes. Their dam, Tuxedo Chimes, was got by Cathedral Chimes from a King Tuxedo mare. Trotting Conference Notices of motion to be considered at the Trotting Conference must be "lodged with the secretary not later than May 24. Applications for dates of race meetings must be lodged at the same time. Smile Again Smile Again, who won a double at the Hutt Park meeting, has been placed to advantage this season by her owner-trainer, P. Gallagher.. The Adioo Guy mare ranks as a sister to Grand Mogul, who has shown his best form in recent efforts in Australia. Smile Again has not done a great amount of racing and her present mark will give her plenty of opportunities. For Oamaru Vinola, who was the best winner trained in Southland last season, is down to race at the Oamaru meeting. Vinola has only appeared on a few occasions so far this term and lack of racing has been against her. At the Wyndham meeting, however, she showed a glimpse of the useful form she showed last season and she may not be long off the winning list. Vinola will also be raced at Forbury Park. Attractive Filly The two-year-old filly by Rey de Oro from Erin’s Pointer, the dam of

Colonel Grattan, is now in M. C. McTigue’s Methven stable. This filly was given her early education under V. Leeming’s care and she shaped up exceptionally well to be regarded as likely to prove a pacer of more than average merit. She was recently purchased at a stiff figure and she will have every opportunity in her new quarters. Back In Work

After a fairly long absence from the active list, Gallant Knight has been recommissioned and he will be prepared for racing early in the coming season. A good pacer over all distances when at his best, Gallant Knight has been a consistent and profitable performer during the current term. However, as is the case with most pacers tightly assessed over two miles, he may find his future opportunities somewhat restricted, although it is expected that the top flight of pacers will be better served in classes in the new season.

Double Winner The harness races at Waimate on Saturday were tame affairs, due to the superiority of the Ashburton pacer Jacose (Jack Potts-Zonophone), halfbrother to Quest. All semblance of a contest in the first race vanished when Warfield broke when attempting to hang on to Jacose two furlongs from home; and from 48 behind in the other event Jacose was a winner at the end of two furlongs. He looks a highly promising pacer. Some high-class horses have opened their winning account on the Waimate track, among them being Harold Logan and Roi I’Or.

Speedy Pacer Pleasant Guy gave a great show of speed in his two races at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he only needs to settle down reasonably well from the barrier to be returned an early winner. In the Morven Trot Handicap, he lost ground at the start, and he again broke with half the journey covered, at which stage he was giving the leaders fully 100 yards. In spite of this he got to within 30 yards of the winner to be second. Pleasant Guy failed to complete the course in his second outing, after another poor beginning. He has done little racing, however, and experience should find him settling down. Licence Refused

What is probably the first incident of its kind occurred at the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting at Claudelands on Saturday, when permission was refused the professional jockey A. J. Gilmer to ride in the Major Kemp Handicap. Application was made by G. T. Mitchell, trainer of Decoy Bird, for a licence for Gilmer, but acting on the advice of the stipendiary steward, Mr A. E. Commons, who did not favour the proposal on the grounds that there were suitable trotting horsemen available, the judicial stewards declined the application. Decoy Bird was ridden by Neville Paul, who won the saddle race on Bold Venture at the Waikato winter meeting in 1938. The Auckland Trotting Owners’, Trainers’ and Breeders’ Association last seasbn asked the Nevz Zealand Trotting Assoication to prohibit professional jockeys from riding in trotting races, as it was not in the interest of young horsemen connected with the light harness sport. The association replied that the matter was entirely in the hands of clubs which promoted saddle events.
