PRESENTATION OF PRINCESSES

SOCIAL CLUB ORGANIZES SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

The social club of Herbert, Haynes and Co., Ltd., can feel justly proud of having organized last night’s patriotic ball, the proceeds of which should considerably augment the patriotic funds. Mr J. R. Martin, the Deputy-Mayor, and Mrs Martin were present. Mr Martin expressed pleasure at the number of dancers present and announced that the three princesses for the Queen Carnival would be formally presented to the public during the evening. Mrs Martin, who wore a black velvet frock, with an antique silver ornament. was presented with a bouquet of red flowers by Mrs A. J. Neil, secretary of the Women’s Metropolitan Patriotic Committee. A pleasing ceremony took place when the three princesses were introduced to Mrs Martin. Miss Philippa Hodge, the Navy Princess, who wore a frock of oyster satin brocaded in gold, and a corsage of red roses, was presented by Mrs Brian Hewat, chairman of the Gladstone subcommittee.

Miss Helen Hargest, the Army Princess, who wore a sapphire blue velvet frock, and a spray of red flowers, was presented by Mrs R. N. Todd, chairman of the Avenal-Northend sub-com-mittee. . Miss Ethel Neame, the Air Force Princess, in a frock of black net with gold coin-spots and a spray of contrasting scarlet flowers, was presented by Mrs J. D. Campbell on behalf of the Central Committee. Mr Martin arranged the sashes, red, white and blue respectively, on the princesses. During the evening dances were performed by pupils of Miss Madge Flaus and at midnight, a humorous sketch, Cinderella, was played under the arrangement of Mr Charles Trim and Mr C. Payne. . Among those present were Major H. C. Mackenzie and Mrs Mackenzie, Mr and Mrs C. A. Young, Mr and Mrs E. Stout, Mr and Mrs E. W. Hargreaves, Mr and Mrs C. Trim, Mr and Mrs D. Cheyne, Mr and Mrs A. J. Dillon, Mr and Mrs G. Pearson, Mr'and Mrs W. J. Rodgers, Mr and Mrs S. J. Cunningham, Mr and Mrs Tapper, Mr and Mrs W. Wylie, Mr and Mrs B. Cochrane, B. McLaren, Mr and Mrs B. Hammond, Mr and Mrs R. J. Eades, Mr and Mrs W. R. Harris. Mesdames R. Mackie, A. J. Neil and H. Rout.
