Miss Margaret Richardson has been appointed infant mistress at the Wyndham school. Miss J. E. McLauchlan has been appointed assistant mistress at the Arrowtown school. Miss I. Mitchel, Dunedin, is the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs M. H. Mitchel, Leet street. There were nine tables at play when the Bridge Circle of the Women’s Club met on Monday evening. Mrs John Tait, Wellington, is the guest of Miss Williams, Prince street, Winton. Miss Phyllis Bragg, Halfmoon Bay, Stewart Island, is the guest of Mrs L. Bragg, Barrow street, Bluff, for a few days. Mrs James Macalister, Avenal, entertained at afternoon tea yesterday in honour of Mrs W. R. J. Smythe, Auckland. Mrs W. A. H. Oliver, Holywood Terrace, was hostess at her home yesterday afternoon in honour of her sister, Mrs W. W. Squires, Nelson. Mrs A. Owen-Johnston, who has been visiting Christchurch, is spending a few days in Dunedin before returning to Invercargill. Mrs J. L. Foster, Thornbury, has returned home after spending three weeks’ holiday with friends in Roxburgh and Invercargill. Mrs C. C. Campbell, Auckland, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs J. F. Dundas, Ness street, will leave tomorrow on her return home. She will visit the Centennial Exhibition en route.

Mrs W. W. Squires, Nelson, who has been visiting relations in Southland, will leave tomorrow on her return north. She will be accompanied by her niece, Miss April Oliver, and they will spend a few days in Wellington before going on to Nelson. Miss Nancy Northcroft, _ younger daughter of the Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft and Mrs Northcroft, Christchurch, has received official advice that she had passed the final stage for the degree of bachelor of architecture. Her

success also entitles her to become an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Miss Northcroft studied at Auckland University College, the only university college in the Dominion that has a chair of architecture. She has the distinction of being the only woman architect in the South Island, and the fourth to qualify in the Dominion.

MR AND MRS F. EDWARDS ENTERTAIN FOR DAUGHTER

A most enjoyable coming-of-age dance was held in the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes Hall last week, when Mr and Mrs F. Edwards entertained some 100 guests in honour of their daughter Jenny. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers, balloons and autumn flowers and foliage. The guest of honour’ wore a frock of pink silk net over taffetas with matching coatee. A large bow of Marina blue silk velvet ribbon was stitched at the centre hem and extended across the front of the frock into the side seams. This bow was repeated at the neckline and velvet ribbon edged the coatee. She wore a triple string of pearls andadiamente bracelet, and carried a diamente bag, oil of which were twenty-first birthday gifts. Mrs Edwards wore a frock of black georgette becomingly trimmed with clover.

The music for dancing was supplied by Mr Thomas Luke, jun. (piano) and Mr E. Moss (accordion). Items were given by Miss Irene Smith and Mi’ Allan Raffle (solos), Mr F. J. Edwards and Mi- T. Smith (duet). The accompanists were Mrs J. L. Ferguson and Miss R. Grigg. Competition dances were won as follows:—Spot waltz, Mr W. M. Davies and Mrs T. Hartwell; Monte Carlo, Miss R. Grigg and Mi’ W. Elliott;. booby prize, Mr and Mrs James Mair. Mr Edwards called upon his daughter Jenny to accept a golden key in honour of her attaining her majority and also a miniature of the key in the form of a gold brooch. Miss Edwards then cut the cake to the singing of “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Miss Edwards responded, thanking her parents. Mr W. M. Davies proposed the toast of Miss Edwards. Mr John Sayers, jun., responded on behalf of Miss Edwards.

Mr Thomas Smith proposed the toast of Mr and Mrs Edwards. Mr Edwards replied, thanking the speakers for their kindly references. Mr D. Craig was master of ceremonies.
