COAL MUST BE MINED
ULTIMATUM TO MINERS MEN MUST DECIDE THIS WEEK GOVERNMENT THREAT TO STEP IN (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received April 23, 11.55 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 23. The Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Menzies) dramatically delivered an ultimatum to the coal miners today when he announced in the House of Representatives that unless the mine workers decide this week to resume work and seek a settlement of their dispute by constitutional means, the Government will take steps to reopen the mines at the beginning of next week.
Mr Menzies added that the Government was determined that war industries and essential services shall be maintained. A message from Melbourne states that the Chief Judge of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court (Sir George Beeby) today declared: “I now state finally that the Court will
not call any conference to settle the coal strike but if the men resume work, the Court will begin a hearing immediately of any application which may be made for variation of the existing award and further action will be taken to set up conciliation committees in the coal areas. “It would be quite futile to call a compulsory conference to discuss a strike against an award, in the first instance as a result of a compulsory conference.”
