RIVERTON

METHODIST MINISTER INDUCTED WELCOME EXTENDED TO THE KEV. H. K. WRIGHT There was a large and representative gathering in the Riverton Methodist Church for the induction of the Rev. H. R. Wright as minister in charge of the Riverton circuit. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. H. Greenslade, of Invercargill, supervisor of the district. He was assisted by Mr D. J. Wesney, vicepresident of the Methodist Conference, and the Rev, G. B. Hinton, of St. Peters, Invercargill, who delivered the charge to the new minister.

After the delivery of the charge, the Rev. W. H. Greenslade formally inducted the new minister, and in doing so urged upon the congregation, who stood in acknowledgment of their renewed loyalty, the need for prayerful support of their pastor. An impressive service was brought to a close by tire new minister pronouncing the Benediction.

An adjournment was then made to the Sunday school hall, where a social gathering was held under the chairmanship of Mr G. Willis, jun., circuit steward.

Mr Willis welcomed Mi - and Mrs Wright to the Riverton circuit, and assured them of the loyal support of all Methodist members and adherents throughout the district. Captain Tatton, of the Salvation Army, and the Rev. J. N. Goodman, of St. Mary’s, extended a cordial welcome on behalf of their respective churches. An apology was received from the Rev. J. A. F. Watson, who was unable to attend. Mr Evans conveyed the greetings, of the lay preachers, the Rev. G. B. Hinton expressed good wishes on behalf of his officials and congregation at. St. Peter’s, and Mr Wesney spoke for the laymen of Invercargill. In conclusion Mr Greenslade said that as supervisor, he desired only to be a friend to the new minister and spoke very highly of Mr Wright’s past work in other spheres. In reply, Mr Wright expressed the appreciation of his wife and himself at the warm welcome they had received. He reminded his hearers that history taught them that the world’s great movements had all begun in quiet country places, and that there was inspiration to be gained from the thought that it was their privilege to mould the characters of those who would later pass on to the larger cities, and perhaps make the history of the future. During the evening musical items were given by Mrs S. H. Mitchell, the accompanist being Miss Robinson. NURSING LECTURES There was an attendance of 20 at the first of the series of home nursing lectures held by the St. John Nursing Division. The superintendent, Mrs A. F. Webb, welcomed several new members and extended an invitation to all women who are interested in home nursing to attend the classes. The lecturer, Sister Gray, explained the use of the roller bandage, and all present had the opportunity of practising several ways of using this bandage.

It was decided that the demonstration of bed making and of sponging patients be included in the third lecture. As this promises to be a lecture of particular interest, it was decided to invite all interested to be present and to make a charge of 1/- for non-mem-bers, the proceeds to go towards the purchase of a first-aid kit. P.W.M.U. BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Riverton branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union Mrs E. H. Gray presided over the following mem-, bers: Mesdames E. V. Rose, L. Stuart, E. B. Patrick, T. Stringer, W. Whittingham, A. Provan, T. Hogg, A. Evans, J. A. F. Watson, J. W. Martin, H. E. Philp, C. B. Matthewson and Miss Birch. Arrangements were made for the annual bring-and-buy sale in the Sunday school hall on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 23. The president advised that the usual parcels of left-off clothing were to be forwarded to the Maori missions in May, and any contributions would be gratefully received. Goods for the orphanage boxes would be forwarded to the Invercargill homes at the end of the month. The Otaitai Bush members are making arrangements to hold a sale next month, and the secretary was instructed to write and thank them for their effort and the keen interest they are taking in this work.
