SMILE AGAIN’S SUCCESS
FALSE PRICE PAID AT HUTT PARK * KING’S PLAY RETURNED TO AUCKLAND Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting close on Monday at 8 p.m. In Favour Millisle will be at a short price in the Randwick Handicap at the Wellington meeting today. May Win Again When he won at Hutt Park on Wednesday Jesse Owens tangled at the start and lost fully 24yds. He promises to be hard to beat again today. Durability If he raced up to the form he showed in the classic events, Durability would be hard to beat among the improvers at Hutt Park. Not Starting In the Members’ Handicap for the Wellington Trots today Marque is not starting, but Mullard (It) is. an additional acceptor.—Press Association. Dam Of Jesse Owens Shiela Fleetwood, the dam of Jesse Owens, was bred at Otautau. She was got by Sir Hector from a mare by Fleetwood Abdallah. Smile Again Smile Again was permitted to pay a false price—more than three parts of a score—when she won at Hutt Park on Wednesday. The opposition was not strong and some of her performances this season had been of a high order. A Newcomer Descendant, who is to have his first race at the Otautau meeting today, is a six-year-old gelding by Wellington Direct from Trixie Belle, and thus a brother to Waterloo Direct. By Ringtrue Ringtrue (a half brother to Peter Bingen and Great Bingen) was recently represented by a winner when Princess Linnett won at Cambridge. Ringtrue has been racing well since sent to Canterbury a short time back. Ned Worthy Ned Worthy gained a well-deserved victory when he finished all over the opposition in the Wainui Handicap. He was standing the leaders up 36 yards at the half-mile, and there was a great deal of merit in his display. Master Potts was unlucky, and is improving. Sentiment and Labour Day were always handy, but Evora and Loch Leven broke up.
Three On End Millisle made it three on end when he scored an easy win in the Introductory Handicap, in which he was a warm favourite, states a Wellington report. Big Kauri, Listowel, Allworthy, and Arapai were the leaders early, with Millisle in ninth place owing to a bad break at the start, but he moved into second place half a mile from home, after which the issue was never in doubt. Franz Derby came from a long way back to be second with Arapai, badly pocketed for a mile, next. Allworthy and Big Kauri were always in the picture, but Biworthy and Premier failed to go steadily. Returned To Owner Tightly assessed over all distances, and with few classes carrying suitable limits, King’s Play has done little racing in recent months, and his trainer, S. A. Edwards, decided to return him to his owner, Mr W. Johnstone, of Tamahere. Since being trained in Canterbury, King’s Play has been a fine stake-winner to reach the best classes, and his marks of 2min Bsec, 2min 41sec, and 4min 21sec over the various distances made him the most tightly assessed pacer in commission during the present season. Last August he won the International Handicap and the Dash Handicap, both over a mile and aquarter, and he was then transferred to Edwards’s stable to win the Ashburton Trotting Cup and the Metropolitan Handicap at Dunedin, to bring his winnings for this season up to £l6lO. In recent months, however, his opportunities have been restricted, and as there were no classes in the immediate future to suit him it was decided to return him to his owner. Though it has not been stated that King’s Play will be retired from racing, there is little possibility of any classes in the Auckland province to suit a pacer of his calibre and this suggests that his racing days are over.
