TINSMITHS SEEK NEW AWARD
COURT RESERVES DECISION (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. A new award for the Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Southland industrial districts was sought by tinsmiths and sheet metal workers in the Court of Arbitration today. The Court reserved its decision. The principal wage clauses and the hours of work were settled before the hearing and the questions still in dispute were the amount to be paid for meal money, the workers’ claim of 1/6 a day extra for welders and also the claim for a penny an hour extra for tradesmen engaged in ship repair work and 1/6 a day extra for all other employees on radiator and ship repair work. The employers asked that 2/6 an hour be awarded for galvanizers, grease or copper turners, hoop turners and men engaged on soldering work, and that picklers, assistant turners and all other adult workers be paid a minimum of 2/4J an hour. The rate for journeymen had already been agreed on as 2/9 an hour and the employers contended that the other work mentioned was semi-skilled work and should be provided for at a lower rate.
