TWO FIGHTS PLANNED FOR LOUIS
Mike Jacobs dictator of the heavyweight championship promotion field, is said to be planning two world title bouts in New York this summer for Joe Louis. The Godoy bout, which Louis narrowly survived, was just a pipe-opener. A great believer in open-air settings for big sport events, he hopes to put these two title bouts in out-door rings, one being tentatively fixed for June and the other for September. In each case the challenger will be the outstanding heavyweight in the field at that stage of the season. Among contenders for the opposite corner to his champion, Jacobs is considering Tommy Farr, the Britisher who went the full 15 rounds with Louis before, and has now been released from Royal Air Force service; Lee Savold, promising young heavyweight from Des Moines; Two-ton Tony Galento, who put Louis on the canvas at Philadelphia last June; Max Baer, former champion; and Valentin Campolo, a South American candidate. As a preliminary, Galento and Baer may meet this month in Jersey City. If the winner is at all impressive, he will have strong claims for the Louis battle in June. Louis will also have at least two more indoor fights this year, if he continues to hold his crown. One of these is almost certain to be a return bout with Arturo Godoy at Madison Square Garden.
Having tried Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and California, Jacobs apparently is now convinced that New York is the only profitable venue for world heavyweight title fights, and has determined to exploit its 1940 possibilities fully.
