Side-Wager Of £250 In Strickland-Richards Match

Ron Richards has unlimited backing to say he can knock out Maurice Strickland, New Zealand boxer, inside seven rounds. His manager (Mr Jack Munro) made this statement in reply to a challenge by Strickland to fight Richards for a side-wager of £250. New Zealand promoters recently tried to arrange a Strickland-Richards match, but Stadiums, Ltd., refused to release Richards. It was then suggested that the match should take place in Sydney, and, on behalf of Strickland, Mr Arthur Greenhalgh suggested a £250 side bet.

“Richards will be ready for Strickland immediately after’ his fight with Archie Moore,” Mr Munro said. “We are prepared to cover any sidewager Strickland’s backers care to subscribe, and, furthermore, we are willing to bet that the fight won’t go more than seven rounds.

“Stadiums, Ltd., have not yet advised us that the fight has been arranged, but we understand Strickland will be made an offer to come to Australia,” he added. STORY CONFIRMED The foregoing story was confirmed in Wellington in relation to the side wager of £250. Strickland’s backers, as a matter of fact, are prepared to raise the wager to £5OO a-side, states a Wellington writer. With the winner also receiving his due percentage of the proceeds, this would. be equivalent to the boxers meeting on a “winner-take-all” basis. Strickland has as yet made no definite plans about a trip to Australia, but he is prepared to leave as soon as arrangements for the fight are completed. In the meantime he is continuing to train.
