WOMEN’S DIVISION

LUMSDEN BRANCH The Lumsden branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held the first meeting for the year. There was a good attendance of members. The president, Mrs E. R. Latham, was chairman. A letter was received from the town clerk about arranging a meeting to be addressed by the Mayoress of Invercargill (Mrs J. R. Hanan) on February 28. It was decided to co-operate and the president appealed to all members to be present to hear Mrs Hanan speak on the proposed scheme of patriotic work for women. As it was “Grandmother’s Day” the roll call was “How our grandmothers managed.” This brought forth some amusing and interesting incidents concerning the women of the early days. A demonstration of home spinning was in keeping with the day and was well received, several members trying their hand at the wheel with varying degrees of success. ATHOL-GARSTON BRANCH The monthly meeting of the AtholGarston branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Athol hall. In the absence of the president the meeting was presided over by Mrs Callander.. The motto for the month was: “Those who sow grumbles do not reap joys," and the roll call, “My most embarrassing moment,” caused much merriment. It was decided to hold the Women’s Division picnic on Saturday, February 24.
