BOWLS A championship - pairs tournament for members of the club was held by the Gore Bowling Club in fine weather. A. Thomson and H. Anderson won one section without a loss, while there was a tie in the other section between R. Jones and E. J. Columb and J. Garrick and F. Rix. The section playoff and final will be played during the week. Details: SECTION A First round—Graham and Watson drew with Anderson and Wilson; Rix and Garrick beat Jones and Columb. Second round—Rix and Garrick beat Graham and Watson; Jones and Columb beat Brown and Wallace. Third round —Graham and Watson beat Brown and Wallis; Anderson and Wilson beat Rix and Garrick. Section tie—Rix and Garrick, Jones and Columb. SECTION B First round—McDougall and Mitchell beat Scobie and Perry; Thomson and H. Anderson beat H. F. Wilson and Frost. Second round—Thomson and Anderson beat Scobie and Perry; T. Brown and C. McLeod beat McDougall and Mitchell. Third round—Thomson and Anderson beat Brown and McLeod; Wilson and Frost beat Scobie and Perry. Section winner—Thomson and Anderson. RIFLE SHOOTING A trophy presented by Mr F. Norton was fired for by members of the Gore Defence Rifle Club at the McNab range in fair conditions. J. Burnett was in good form and won the trophy and the Mathews button for top score off the rifle with 100. He also won the range prize at 300 yards with a scratch 34 and the prize at 600 yards with a scratch 33. W. D. Milne won the prize at 500 yards with 34, including one point handicap. The detailed scores, with handicaps, are as follows:

ADULT EDUCATION The establishment of an adult education movement at Gore and in the district was discussed at a private meeting held at Gore. Several study groups are being formed, one to take a course on current international issues being assured. Other likely subjects are psychology, economics and child pyschology. It is hoped that a series of lectures on world affairs may also be arranged. A decision to hold a public meeting at the council chambers next Tuesday evening was made, when all who are interested are to be invited to be present to hear the plans. At this meeting a talk on “Finland and the Finns,” will be given by Mr John A. Brailsford, organizing tutor of the W.E.A. The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) will preside. RETURNED SOLDIERS The financial membership of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association now stands at 464, compared with 448 last meeting night and 453 for the same period last year, according to a report of the secretary (Mr G. Gerken) to a meeting of the executive of the association. The West Otago Sub-Association has 75 financial members and the Mataura Sub-Association 58.

Those present at the meeting were:— Messrs A. L. McDowell (president), J. S. McDonald, P. R. Stewart, T. F. Rusbridge, M. Green, A. C. Steel, J. Adams, W. D. Shelton, W. H. Sadlier, F. M. Murray, E. J. Columb and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., representing the West Otago SubAssociation, was also present. Motions of sympathy were carried with Mr D. Kerr in the death of his wife, Mr H. R. Brock in the death of his sister, and with Messrs G. C. Clearwater, J. T. Clearwater, A. J. Clearwater and F. H. Clearwater in the death of their brother.

The secretary of the West Otago SubAssociation (Mr H. J. Hay) advised that as a result of a flag day at Tapanui the sum of £3O had been forwarded to the Patriotic Committee at Dunedin. The Gore Municipal Band wrote accepting the association’s invitation to be present at the annual picnic at Otamita on March 9. FAREWELL FUNCTION FOR SOLDIER A farewell was tendered Private Owen O’Neill, who has finished his final leave, at a general meeting of the Gore Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee. The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), wished Private O’Neill the best of luck, and on behalf of the committee presented him with a cheque similar to those received by members of the Ist Echelon. WORK AT ABATTOIRS Twenty cows, 54 heifers, 68 bullocks, 428 sheep, 78 lambs and 51 pigs were slaughtered at the Gore abattoirs during the month of January, according to the report of the manager (Mr D. Dunlop-Young) to last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council.
