SOLDIERS’ FAREWELL COMMITTEE OFFICE-BEARERS ELECTED A meeting was held in the Clifden hall to form a social committee to arrange for farewell presentations for soldiers from the district leaving for overseas service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Those present were: Messrs J. J. Begley, J. Dixon, T. Knowler, R. T. Pearce, G. Fowle, J. Cochran, M. Cosgrove, H. Lawrence, W. McKenzie, W. Fowle, J. Chamberlain, R. Owen, F. Bates, D. O’Brien, K. Wilson, Mrs W. Fowle, Mrs F. Bates, Mrs F. Young, Mrs H. Watson.
Mr D. O’Brien was elected chairman and Mr K. Wilson secretary, all those present constituting a committee. An executive committee was formed comprising Messrs D. O’Brien, K. Wilson, T. Knowler, J. J. Begley, F. Bates, J. Dixon, J. Cochran, R. Pearce, W. McKenzie, H. Lawrence, M. Cosgrove, Mrs W. Fowle, Mrs F. Bates. In view of the petrol restrictions the secretary was instructed to write to the Oil Fuel Controller asking for an issue of coupons for soldiers home on final leave who had no way of paying farewell visit to friends or relations.
