SWIMMING

Success Of Ex-Pupils’ Carnival PARADE OF LOCAL N.Z. CHAMPIONS An exhibition of swimming and diving by Southland’s New Zealand swimming champions was a feature of the Ex-Pupils’ Club’s carnival at the municipal tepid baths last night. Six champions took part. They were Misses J. Macdonald, B. Westerby and D. Clark and K. Shaw, B. Morgan and D. Doake (junior diving champion). Their exhibition was warmly applauded. Most of the events on the programme were keenly contested and several races were won by a touch. A trophy given by Mr W. F. Webb to the winner of the 100 yards senior handicap was won by F. W. Springford who conceded 12 seconds to the limit swimmers. During the programme the novelty diving act “Monte Cristo” was carried out with much gusto by “Francis the Drake,” a local “veteran” who defied all the laws of fire and smoke and extricated himself from a blazing canvas covering as he plunged into the water. A life-saving race and an exhibition of water polo by junior teams completed an entertaining programme. Mr A. J. Kingsland was the starter and Mr J. C. Kirkland controlled the diving events. Following are the results: HERBERT SMITH TRUST CUP NO I (Boys under 15) 100 Yards Freestyle Holder: B. McNeilage (Technical College) D. Kirkland 1 D. Doake 2 V. Silverwood (Otautau) 3 Won by 20 feet.
