WOMEN’S DIVISION
INVERCARGILL BRANCH There was a small attendance at the monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, presided over by Mrs R. A. Riddle. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Brownridge was passed. It was decided to support the Women’s Patriotic Committee by bringing gifts for the soldiers to each meeting. A letter from the Association for Country Education announcing the year’s programme was received. Members expressed a desire to know more about the association’s box system and to begin demonstrations at meetings if time permitted. A letter was received giving particulars about the farmers’ trip to the Centennial Exhibition. A practical demonstration of bandag-
iug and first-aid work was given by Mrs Chapman, at the conclusion of which a gift was presented to _ her in recognition of her services during recent months. Mrs Officer was the winner of the best bloom competition, with Mrs Fairweather, jun. second. |
OTATARA BRANCH
The Otatara branch of the Women’s Division Of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting recently. Mrs Gordon presided over a fair attendance of members. The roll call, “A hair hint,” was well responded to. Competitions resulted: —Baked apples: Mrs Hawkes 1. Best bloom: Mrs Blomfield 1, Miss Tuffery 2, Mrs Low 3. Best rose: Mrs Low 1, Mrs Gordon 2 and 3. After the meeting the picnic that was to have been held at the river, took place in the school grounds. Several races were held, and games played.
WAIKIWI BRANCH
The February meeting of the Waikiwi branch of the Women’s Division I of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Waikiwi Hall recently, Mrs W. A. Robertson presiding. One new member was welcomed. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Waters, Haynes, Steel, A. Crooks and E. Board. It was decided to hold a flower show on February 29, also to start home nursing classes soon. i
The competition results were: Best bloom: Mrs McKenzie 1, Mrs Martin 2, Miss V. Robertson 3. Black currant jelly: Miss Irwin 1, Mrs McKenzie 2, Mrs McDougall 3. Roll call for March: “What our , mothers had to do without.” Competition for March.—Knitted square, nine inch. Mrs Myers thanked the hostesses, Mesdames H. Broad, Soper, Gibb and Ramage.
BROWNS BRANCH
The monthly meeting of the Browns branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the hall. Mrs Anderson presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened by the reading of the creed. A motion of sympathy was extended to Mrs Patton in her illness. Miss V. Irwin gave a talk and demonstration on the aim of beauty culture. The competitions resulted.—Best bloom: Mrs Pettigrew 1, Mrs Grey 2, Mrs Chisholm 3. Slice of Christmas cake: Miss M. Knight 1, Mesdames Knott and Silk equal 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Silk and White.
RIVERTON BRANCH
At the first monthly meeting for the year of the Riverton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union i there was a fair attendance of mem-
bers. Miss A. fe. McNaughton presided. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with the relations of the late Mrs Stevenson, who had been one of the oldest members of the division. A letter of thanks for the Christmas cake sent by the branch was received from the coastal guards. From headquarters a letter was received stating that Mrs Noel Adams, Dominion president, would be visiting Southland about March 20. An invitation to its birthday partyon February 26 was received from the Women’s Institute. During the afternoon Mrs Black gave a demonstration on bottling peas. The results of the bloom competition were: Mrs G. Willis 1 and Mrs T. Ward 2.
RYAL BUSH BRANCH
The February meeting of the Ryal Bush Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently, when Mrs Allen presided over a fair attendance. Members stood in silence in memory of the late Mrs Frew. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Hartley and Mr Frew in their bereavement. The president gave an account of her visit to the children’s health camp. Mesdames Buxton, Allen, Blakie, Davidson and G. Wishart were appointed to represent the division on the Soldiers’ Farewell Committee. Because of the petrol restrictions the
birthday party was abandoned, but it t was decided to continue with monthly J meetings. j The majority of members were in . favour of conscription. s The hostesses were Mrs Burton, Mrs 1 Gray and Miss Storey.
OTAPIRI BRANCH
r Mrs Wadworth presided over a good ! attendance of members at the February * meeting of the Otapiri branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ : Union. The roll call was: “Where I spent my i holiday.” One new member was well corned. Results of the competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs D. Brown 1, Mrs H. Cowie 2, Miss K. Taylor 3.
