USE OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS
(United Press Association) DUNEDIN, February 17. An important pronouncement on the functions and powers of the provincial patriotic councils has been conveyed to the Mayor, Mr A. H. Allen, in a telegram from the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), the effect of which is that the regulations empower the council to provide for future requirements. The Otago Council had delayed its canvass of business firms for funds to provide comforts for the men in camps and on the troopships as it desired the right to build up a fund as in the last war to meet the needs of Otago men on their return from the war when through sickness or wounds they and their dependents might require some supplementing of military pensions. Mr Parry’s reply states that he considers the regulation gives the power sought and that the gazetting of an amendment to the regulations will be referred to the National Council. The Minister’s telegram concludes: “The urgent need appears to me to be for the provision of comforts overseas.”
